Taking on the Chairman’s Role BY GREG GRETSCH
The day Carrie and I first stepped into the vestibule of the Cathedral on our tour of Cathedral School for Boys marked the beginning of an important journey for our family; it was the day we first became a part of the Cathedral School for Boys community. On that first visit, Father Abidari was sharing with the boys some lessons learned from the monks that were in residence at the
As with every family when they first joined the CSB community, we started as active and engaged parents. As we got to know the community more, and understood where we might be able to contribute more, like so many, we became active volunteers—always with an eye towards supporting the great teachers and administrators that make the CSB elementary education such a wonderful experience for our boys. Four years ago, I was honored to be asked to leverage some of my professional experience in Board work in support of CSB by joining the CSB Board of Trustees. Over these last four years, I have gotten to know the School better from this new vantage point. In so doing, I have developed even more respect and admiration for the team of educators and administrators at CSB that we entrust our boys to during this journey from little boys to young men. With seven years into our family’s time at CSB—all four boys now well into their educational journeys—and four years of experience on the Board, I’m stepping into a new role this year as chairman. Cathedral School for Boys and its community are what they are today because of the hard work and commitment of those who came before us. I look forward to building on that foundation. I’m excited about the changes I’ve seen during the last three years of Burns’ tenure and look forward to working with Burns, the rest of the Board, and the entire CSB team to help fulfill the School’s mission, execute on the strategic plan, and like those who came before us, continue to strengthen CSB for future generations.
Cathedral. Cathy Madison built on those lessons for the eager touring parents by showing us some of the intricate sand art the monks had created, and by explaining how the practice of making this art fit with their faith. Here we were, standing in an Episcopal Cathedral at an Episcopal school listening to our hosts speak eloquently with wonder and reverence about a different religious tradition. With that display of openness and inclusiveness, we knew the Cathedral School community was the right place for our family. From that first visit to the Cathedral, to our first child marching into the Cathedral for the first time at the start of kindergarten, our time at CSB has been filled with many firsts. Now that all four of our boys are well into their time at CSB, we’ve started having a few lasts as well. While it’s all going by so fast, happily for us we still have many more years of firsts before our family’s time at CSB, at least for this generation, draws to a close. But the thing that will stay with us long past that time is our connection to the CSB community and the important place that community holds in our lives.
