1. DAY OF SERVICE, November 20, 2017 We introduced a “Day of Service” for all students on November 20. It was a day that involved a variety of service-related activities. Ms. Ghidini and kindergarteners created art notes of peace to be left in public places and inspire hope. 2. GRANDPARENTS & SPECIAL FRIENDS DAY, November 21, 2017 Boys invited their VIPs to Cathedral for a bit of show-and-tell. 3. GINGERBREAD MAKING, Dec 11, 2017 Kindergarteners constructed gingerbread houses just before the holiday break. 4. JAZZY INTERSESSION 2018, March 2, 2018 The boys and faculty heard the sounds of The Suits and Ties, and lunchtime has never been so jazzy. Band members included Drew on flute; Dylan on piano; Parker on bass; and Ben on drums; all led by Mr. Barrett. The performance was a showcase of the band’s Intersession skills. 5. PARENTS ASSOCIATION GALA: ONCE UPON A TIME, March 4, 2018 Harrison Wilkes & Mike Pola (our very own Hansel & Gretel) made this year’s live auction “the fairest of them all!” The live auction raised over $90,000, and the Raise-the-Paddle effort to fund modern classroom furniture raised over $200,000. Plus we had one of our highest guest turn-outs ever with 320 attendees! Thank you also to Michele Bell & Halle Cane for all of their work in planning the “Once Upon a Time” gala. 6. #ENOUGH WALKOUT, March 14, 2018 Upper School boys stood at Grace Cathedral’s Great Steps for 17 minutes of silence in protest against gun violence on March 14. As the boys started their walkout, the cathedral’s bell tolled. 7. DOUG GOODKIN & THE PENTATONICS, May 7, 2018 Kindergarteners through sixth-graders enjoyed the jazzy stylings of Doug Goodkin and the Pentatonics. Doug Goodkin is an internationally acclaimed music educator. The Pentatonics are a jazz band dedicated to bringing all kinds of jazz to all kinds of people of all ages. The musicians are both dedicated jazz artists and dedicated music teachers trained in the Orff approach of teaching music to children. 8. PEN PALS MEET…FINALLY!!, May 17, 2018 Mr. Chou’s Mandarin eighth-grade class met Ms. Mei Xue Burke’s Mandarin class after many months of corresponding as pen pals. 9. SHAKESPEARE ON THE PLAZA, May 21, 2018 The 7th grade presented poetry readings in Veazie Court next to the Cathedral. 10. HARRY POTTER BAND CONCERT, May 31, 2018 Mr. Barrett and his concert band performed the score from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone movie as the film silently played behind them. 11. FIELD DAY, June 7, 2018 The 2017-18 Red and Gold Teams competed to see who is the ultimate color. Gold Team wins! 12. STUDENT COUNCIL FAIR, June 13, 2018 The day before graduation, Cathedral celebrated the end of the year with our annual Student Council Fair. Boys first watched the 7th- and 8th-grade slam dunk basketball contest, then Big and Little Brothers paired up to play musical chairs, bounce in the bouncy castles, visit the petting zoo, and stack giant Jenga blocks (among other activities). We topped it all off by snacking on green onion pancakes, churros, and snow cones! FALL 2017 • RED & GOLD | 77
