he goes to the cross. [Place the figure behind the cross, and take the light bulb from the cross, putting it in the socket in the uplifted hand. Turn the face so as to make it look glad.] There is .a verse in Psalm 34 that tells us about this. It reads: “They looked unto him [the Lord], and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.” (Psa. 34:5). See, he receives a light when he comes to the cross. His face is changed from a sad face to a glad face. [Contact the wire in the man’s foot with the toaster coil at the cross.] The light bums brightly. If the man gets away from the cross, going toward the world, the light grows dim and his face becomes sad. Even though the man has gone to ward the world, if he returns, his light will shine brightly again, and his face Acts 4:82 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul; neither said any of them that anght of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. 33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. 84 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, 85 And laid them down at the apostles* feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need. 8:1 And In those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neg lected in the dally ministration. 2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. 8 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may ap point over this business. 4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. 5 And the saying pleased the whole mul titude: and they chose Stephen,’ a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch; 8 Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. 7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied , in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company’ of the priests were obedient to the faith. LESSON TEXT : Acts 4:32-35; 8:1-7. GOLDEN TEXT: “ And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of/on e soul” (Acts 4:82). DEVOTIONAL READING: 1 John 3:13- 18. Outline and Exposition I. A l l T h in g s C o m m o n (4:32-35) HESE EARLY disciples were marked by a unity of faith (v. 32). They “were of one heart and of one soul." They also were marked by a unity of hope (v. 33). The pas sage implies that their great hope was their own resurrection to come, and that eventuality was made sure by the resurrection of their Lord. All the

will be glad. If he takes the cross with him, he can go to the world to witness, and can'keep his light shining brightly. [Hold the figure back of the cross, with the wire on the foot contacting the toaster coil.] The Christian is to witness by his life and his words. Christ said to His dis ciples: “Ye are the light of the world.” Then He gave them thi& command: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matt. 5:14, 16). The secret of a.happy Christian life is to stay in touch with Christ and far away from really entering in with the wrong activities of the world. Then we shall be able to witness to those in the world as the disciples did on and after the day of Pentecost. preaching of the early disciples ’was based upon the literal resurrection of Jesus Christ from among the dead. Apart from the fact that Christ rose from the grave and is alive for ever more, Christianity would be merely one among other religions; but with this fact thoroughly established, Christian ity is distinct from all others and is shown to be a revelation from the living God. Moreover, these early disciples were marked by a unity of love (vs. 34, 35). All things were held in com mon. Disposing of the property they owned, they laid the proceeds at the apostles’ feet for distribution among all the company, according as each had need. It should be held clearly in mind that this action was purely voluntary;, the Lord did not demand it. Because of the seeming beauty of such a method, of living, we are in dan ger of thinking that it would be an ideal manner of life for present-day disciples to adopt. To do so would mean that we would be governed by the practices of the early disciples, rather than by their principles. The practices of believers may change or may prove faulty, but the principles, when based upon the revelation of God in His Word, are unfluctuating and abiding. The four great principles of t]ie Book of the Acts are: The Word of God—the Message; the Spirit of God BLACKBOARD LESSON "fino THE mULTITUDE OF THE ITI THAT BELIEUED UJERE OF ORE HEART ADD OF !t OHE SOUL' «as 4:52 s
