preaching the Word. Facing this prob lem, the apostles did not resign, but committed the matter into the hands of carefully chosen laymen. Thus freed, the preachers went about their primary business, with the result that tlje Word increased and men were converted in great numbers. The same result would certainly come to pass today, I am quite sure, if churches would set their pastors free from the hundred and one activities which divert their time and energy from the real business of their calling. Golden Text Illustration A cts 4:32 The following incident happened in a small Western town where the people are poor, and where, though there are several churches, they frequently bor row each other’s equipment and work together in harmony. One evening a church bell was heard ringing vigorous ly. The family seated around the tea table looked up in surprise. “What bell is that?” they asked in chorus. No one seemed to know until one at last exclaimed, “ Oh, I remember now! That is the Episcopal bell ringing for the Baptist revival that begins at the Presbyterian church tonight.” There was no hard feeling there! —Five Thousand Best Modern Illustrations. help. Other Christians besides Bar nabas did this, too. No one told them to do it; it was love in their hearts for the Lord Jesus that made them want to show kindness to all the Lord’s children. Whenever the gifts were made lovingly and unselfishly, God blessed them. And He blessed the tes timony in the church then, too. But He had to punish those people who acted as though they were giving to the Lord, but who were really showing a deceitful, wicked spirit. In every family—your family and mine, as well as the “family” we call the church— the Lord is grieved whenever He finds any one who speaks or acts a lie. But we can make Him glad, if we will, by giving freely because our hearts are filled with love for Him.

Object Lesson H e l p f u l or H a r m f u l H a n d s OBJECTS: The two hands of the speaker, or pictures cut from maga zines and mounted on cardboard. (One hand should be clenched and upraised, and the other open and outstretched.) LESSON: The objects which I am to use this morning are in plain sight. What are they? “We give up.” They are my hands. You are won dering how hands can be used as ob jects with which to teach a lesson. Did you know that hands are the symbols of two great factors in the world? A clenched hand like this one suggests a fight. An open, outstretched hand, such as this, suggests peace and help fulness. Hands can be either helpful or harm ful. The true followers of Christ always have been helpful. We have a very good example of this in Acts 4. The Christians’ possessions were sold, and the money was given to the apostles in order that the poor might be cared for. A result of this spirit of helpfulness is found in Acts 4:33: “With great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.” Again in Acts 6, we read about the church’s appointing some of its members to min ister to the needs of the widows. If we want to he used by the Lord Jesus today, we should he very careful to manifest a spirit of helpfulness in stead of a spirit of harmfulness.

LESSON: The followers of the Lord Jesus Christ who became the first mem bers of the church were like one big family. The Bible says that they Were “of one heart and of one soul” (v. 32). They did not selfishly claim anything as their own, but they “had all things common” (v. 32). Our lesson today is about a man named Barnabas, who had a farm. What do you think he did? He sold his property, and brought the money to the apostles, to be shared with other believers who were poor and needed
