There is no manly quality that we admire in men, as characteristic of true manhood, which is not exemplified in the earthly life of the Lord Jesus Christ. His life is sometimes called the Great Example because He leaves us only that which is good as a pattern. Perhaps no manly quality is more lauded by the world, than courage, and no human weakness more despised than cowardice. When we look to the life of Jesus for an example of courage, we find that He faced all the tests of His life, and His death, With firmness and fearlessness. But courage may, and often- does,, “rise with danger,’’ and under the heat of the moment a heroic quality in man responds to the sudden or the unusual. It was not this courage with which Jesus Christ faced the cross. He was not suddenly faced with an emergency.
