He tells us emphatically what to do, and we obey in the degree to ■which we love Him. Our Lord means that the men and women He will use are those who love Him so devotedly that, in com parison, human and social rela tionships are “hate.” c. Note well that He is not talking about our eternal position (sal vation), but our usefulness in this life (discipleship). 2. Spiritual (v. 27). a. Each “disciple” will have some cross to bear in the “following” of Jesus Christ. For “disciple ship” there will be denying of self and personal desires.' b. Illus.: Some people object to questioning a Christian’s right to the cigarette, the dance, the theater, etc. The argument is that ours is a positive and not a negative gospel, that “it is a matter of ‘receiving,’ not ‘giving up.’ ” Let it be carefully and prayerfully noted that any one who would “come after” the Lord Jesus denies himself (Matt. 16:24). That nreans “giving up” ! It may be possible to be saved and do these things; it is not I possible to do them and be a “disciple.” What do you choose? H. THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP IS MENTAL AND PHYSICAL. Read John 15:18-27. 1. Mental (vs. 18, 19). a. There is no trial so severe as the disfavor of man. It is easier to bear “the lash” than scoffing and ridicule. Illus.: Give example from your own experience, at work or in the classroom. Have you been able to emerge from these experiences victorious ? Note Acts 5:41. b. The same spirit that “mocked” our Lord will mock the Lord’s people. Note Mark 10:34; cf. Acts 17:32 and Matthew 5:11. 2. Physical (v. 20). a. Being “ religious” will not bring persecution, but being a disciple will. b. Every crisis of world history has seen: (1) a “middle-of-the-road” group who by courting favor have escaped ridicule and perse cution, and (2) a glorious, con trasting minority who were will- in to die for a Cause. Ulus.: Stephen (Acts 7:54-60); early Christian martyrs (consult En cyclopedia or Foxe’s Book of ' Martyrs); and recent martyrs (consult your pastor about John and Betty Stam and others). A very remarkable article in Time, December 23, 1940, p. 38, gives detailed information of terrific and brutal persecution in on« of

Christianity stands or falls on the truth or fallacy of the greatest miracle of miracles, the resurrection of the human body of Jesus Christ. “Too many Easter sermons in Christian pulpits ignore the assured fact of bodily resurrection.” What became of the body of Jesus Christ? Will the bodies of all men be raised from the grave? When? What will the bodies of men be like in the resurrection? These and other vital questions are carefully considered in this timely book, including the denials of the resurrection of the body, by popular false cults today, such as Millennial Dawnism (Jehovah’s Witnesses), Christian Science, Spiritism, jBahaism and Modernism. 127 pages.
