our world powers during the past year. By all means use this ma terial t° reveal how the blood of martyrs is the seed of the church. For the leader 1. This meeting, properly conducted, can be used to alter the future of your society and church and city! Oh, for a young people’s group transformed by/ the fervent, burning zeal of “disciple- ship” ! Do you desire it for your society? Note Matthew 5:6, 2; Take time to discuss why the char acteristics of true discipleship are so lacking in. the Christian church today. 3. Could you go before your society and declare yourself determined to be a “ disciple” of Jesus »Christ ? Then do! . WILL AMERICA . . . SUFFER DEFEAT? [ Continued from Page 89] Isaiah talking of this day when he pen ned, “His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber” (Isa. 56:10) ? What a tragedy! Dumb dogs!-Soap, soup, and sunshine will never take the place of the new birth. General Grant said, “Hold fast to the Bible. It is the sheet anchor of your

liberties. You cannot permanently en slave a Bible-reading people.” Presi dent Wilson said, “If every man in the United States would read a chapter of the Bible every day, most of our national problems would disappear.” But the Bible is not receiving recog nition in America today. This age ap pears to have in mind a program some thing such as this: Satan—eulogized Sin—minimized Bible—ostracized Christ—humanized Man—divinized Modern Jehoiakims are cutting up God’s Book of Life and throwing por tions offensive to the latest vagary of scientific speculation, pseudo - culture, and “commandments of men” (Matt, 15:9) into the fires of disbelief and in difference (cf. Jer. 36:22-24).,, In the eighteenth century the inspira tion of Scripture was denied on the basis of considering a revelation from God to men an impossibility. In the nineteenth century there were numer ous attacks against the historical back ground of Scripture, Moderns are now contending all knowledge is . but the product, of the human mind—-the Bible and every other book. If we even had perused only rapidly the pages of Holy Writ, we would be compelled to conclude the loving God of Scripture would be seriously offended at the above misinterpretations as to the origin, purpose, and reliability of Scripture. As Pilate sentenced Jesus to death and himself to disgrace, so does a nation doom itself in ostracizing the Bible, the church, the Lord’s Day, and even the Almighty Hlmseif. America’ s Greatest Need The primary need of America is not for material prosperity. We are the most prospered nation in the world. We take for ourselves one-half the world’s yearly income, and to one who has traveled in foreign lands the contrast is painfully evident. Prosperity never saved any nation frpm ultimate defeat, but it has brought defeat to many a nation. It is not more secular education that this nation needs. We are now the most educated nation in the world, but pro fessors in our many schools have for gotten the wisdom of Solomon, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Prov. 1:7). It is not more pleasure. Our highways, our theaters, our cocktail lounges are filled with those who are “lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God” (2 Tim. 3:4).- America needs something other than Coca Cola to refresh her, and something other than Luckies to soothe her nerves. “Righteousness exalt- eth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people” (Prov. 14:34), Will- America, like Germany, suffer

defeat? Emphatically, Yes! Unless she has more than prosperity, professors, and pleasure! The Almighty has ruled that the nations that forget God shall be forgotten. King Jehoshaphat of old gave wise counsel to his nation, “Believe in the Lord your God, so shall ye be estab lished; believie his prophets, so shall ye prosper” (2 Chron. 20:20). The greatest need of America is to return to God and to the God-given principles upon which this nation was founded; to return to the Word of God as of final authority for private and national life; to return to the Christ of God as personal Saviour and national Guide. * / In a word, to preclude the defeat Germany has already suffered, America needs GOD. He awoke startled, and the struggle went on, but at last he yielded, kneeling low before his Lord in deep submission. The days went^by and. strange things followed. Disaster suddenly surrounded him on every hand. The bank closed that held his financial situation in its grasp. The business went to the. wall, and he had to begin all over again. There were perils and perplexities everywhere. But still his Christian wit ness grew brighter. People marveled at the way he took his testings. He was'walking through it all in the daily consciousness of the Presence of Christ as his constant companion. There came a Sunday when he sat in a shadowed seat back under the gallery of the Sunday-school room during the review of the Sunday-school lesson by the superintendent. Suddenly the su perintendent asked a question. ‘‘Children, did any of you ever see anybody who made you think of Jesus Christ? who seemed like what you would expect of Jesus Christ if He were to come back here in visible form ?”. A quick eager hand went up, that of Jimmy Belden, ■one of Philip’s Boy Scouts. “Well, Jimmy?” said the superintend ent. Jimmy stood up promptly and in a clear voice said: ,. “Mr. Philip Gardley!” Then did Philip Gardley bow his head and cover his eyes with his hand, his heart filled with glad humility. God had given him that great honor and privilege of being able to show Christ, in some small measure at least, to that one Boy Scout, and perhaps to give him some little idea of what that life was whereby Jesus conquered death! It thrilled him with a joy inexpressible and brought tears of humility, to his eyes. I T he End ] LIFE OUT OF DEATH [ Continued from Page 94]
