DAILY Devotional Readings

human destitution—“Blessed are the poor in spirit” The greatest blessing we ever get from God is to know that we are destitute. We have to real ize that we cannot earn or win anything from God; we must either receive it as a gift or go without it. We have to enter the kingdom through the door of destitution.—Oswald Chambers. 9. A Costly School “For unto you it is given in the be half of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake” (Phil. 1:29).

And watch My silent working, > My deep and hidden way, You’d cast away your frettings, You’d cease to fear and doubt; You’d rest upon My promise,' And let Me work it out. But though you cannot see Me, If you will only trust My wisdom, skill unerring, My power to uttermost, My faithfulness ne’er failing, My love beyond degree, I’ll bring to full fruition My perfect plan for thee. His Will Before My Need “Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” (Matt. 6:10). O Thou who hast taught us to seek first Thy kingdom and its righteous ness, teach me to say, “Thy will be done,” before I say, “Give me my daily bread.” . . . Show me that it is only the possession of my soul that makes the possession of the world any gain . . . Guide me into the discovery that the pleasures at Thy right hand are the only things that are "pleasures for evermore.”—George Matheson. 6. How to Contend “Ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 3). Let us beware, lest, while friendly to truth, we are wanting in unfriendli- hess to error. Necessity is laid upon us to contend for the faith “once deliv ered unto the saints,” and that right .earnestly. Only let us remember it is by the Word that we conquer for the Word. Our weapons are not carnal, yet they are mighty to the pulling down of strongholds of Satan.—Frank H. White. 7. Power Through the Daily Walk “He that walketh in a perfect way, he shal\ serve me” (Psa. 101:6). It is the Lord who adds to the church, but He is wont to do so by means, and while the preaching of the Word is one means, . . . the daily walk of the saint is another. There are times when the Holy Spirit seems to put forth little power in public ordinances, but it is a question if He often ceases to give pow er to such a proclamation as is given forth in the daily walk of believers. —Andrew Bonar. 8. Starting at Destitution “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink” (John 7:37). Our Lord always starts where no human being ever does, that is, with —F. G. M. 5.

1. Expectation from God “My soul, wait thou only\ upon God; for my expectation is from him” (Psa. 62:5). Success is certain when the Lord has promised it. Although you may have pleaded month after month with out evidence of answer, it is not pos sible that the Lord should be deaf yhen His people are earnest in a mat- _er which concerns His glory. Delayed answers often set the heart searching itself, and so lead to contrition and spiritual reformation . . . Continue in prayer and watching. . —Charles Haddon Spurgeon. 2. The Mind of Christ “Overcome evil with good” (Rom. 12 : 21 ). Evil for good is devil-like, evil for evil is beast-like, good for good is man like, good for evil is God-like. Yes, that lifts me into the heavenlies in Christ Jesus. Then have I the mind of Christ! . . . In an infinitely real and more intimate sense, the soul that dwells in “the secret place” is shadowed by the sleepless grace and love of God. God’s coolness is more than a match for our fever heat. His quench ings are transformations. —J. H. Jowett. S. Our Lord Knows “We have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of oUr infirmities” (Heb. 4:15). One of W. Pett Ridge’s most amusing stories was about a prayer he heard in a North London chapel, which be gan: “O Lord, as Thou hast doubtless seen in today’s Daily News, our dear friend . . . has suffered a sore affliction—” Undoubtedly the picture of Deity reading a London dally to find out the latest news concerning His children is a little naive; but we may be sure of this, that no care, sorrow, bereavement, or tragedy escapes His notice. —A London Journalist. 4. It Is the Lord “That disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord” (John 21:7).
