God keeps a costly school. Many of its lessons are spelled out through tears . . . This school of our heavenly Father will soon close for us; the term time is shortening every day. Let us not shrink from a hard lesson or wince under any rod of chastisement. The richer will be the crown, and the sweeter will be heaven, if we endure cheerfully to the end and graduate in glory. —Theodore L. Cuyler. 10. Keeping Company NOW “ Changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Cor. 3:18). Is it my ambition this very day that in all my ways I may be like Christ? . . . I may talk about the joy of being like Christ when He comes. It is mere empty talk unless I am seeking to be like Him now. Why need I talk of the joy of being with Him, if I do not give Him five minutes of my company throughout the day?—J. R. Caldwell. 11. The Effect of the Cross “He died for all, that they which live should not hepceforth live unto them selves, but unto him” (2 Cor. 6:15). When the love of the cross, with all its mighty energies, gains possession of our hearts, then only are we delivered from this present evil world, with which we have henceforth not less to do, but more! For before us lies the task of proclaiming the gospel to every crea ture; and ahead of us lies the gleaming promise of being with Him in the land for which deliverance from the world spirit alone prepares us. —J. Stuart Holden. 12. A Shortened Path “My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle” (Job 7:6).

Our dear Lord is gracious to lus, who shorteneth and hath made the way to glory shorter than it was, so that the crown that Noah did fight for for five hundred years children may now obtain in fewer years. And heaven is in some' sort better for us now than it was for Noah; for the Man, Christ, is there now who was not come in the flesh in Noah’s days.—Selected. 13. Best in the Valley “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil” (Psa. 23:4). We often find that the “valley of the shadow” gives rest to eyes which have become wearied with the “green pas tures,” and tired with the gleaming of the “still waters.” It is sometimes the shadow that restoreth our soul. The darkness often brings the healing medic ament. In the apparent misfortune the Lord has hidden a fortune. God has concealed His riches in the night. The overcast sky ■is frequently our best friend.—J. H. Jowett. 14. Unfailing Strength "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Phil. 4:13). Our text does not say, “Which has strengthened me.” It is not past, but present strength that we want. Some think that because they were converted fifty years ago they can do without daily supplies of grace. . . . It is not your old experiences, but your daily experiences; not your old drinkings at the well of life, but your daily refresh ings from the presence of God, that can make you strong to do all things. —Charles Haddon Spurgeon. 15. Invitation to All “ Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). Untold sorrows characterize the hu man race, and this invitation is not con fined to those who are laden with sin. Jesus addresses any one who is bowed with any possible sorrow, any possible bereavement. Whatever the burden up on you, the Lord speaks to you. And what a blessing it is that you may and can rest, whatever your suffering, ‘ on the Lord’s breast!—Edward Dennett. 16. Shaking Down the Fruit “Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it” (Psa. 119:140j. Pause at any verse of Scripture you choose and shake every bough of it, that some fruit may drop down. If your soul really hungers, the Spirit of God will not send you away empty. You shall at length find in* one, and that perhaps a short verse, such an abundance of delicious fruit that you will gladly seat yourself under its shade, and abide there as under a tree laden with fruit.—Martin Luther.
