Mountain Missionaries William G. (’27) and Mrs. Graves (Madge Henderson, ’23), 1701 Cedar ¡?t., Berkeley, Calif., whose work of “By-Way Evangelism,” a movement to reach unchurched communities in the mountains of California and elsewhere, has included in its fellowship at vari ous times several Bible Institute grad uates, write of the whereabouts of some of them: Arnold (’37) and Mrs. Riffel are serving at Stonyford, Calif., and also at Elk Creek, Chrome, and Paskenta. Harold (’34) and Mrs. Johan- son (Ella A. Claassen, ’34), have been serving in the church at Cottonwood, Calif., and have had to enlarge their church building. A t Cottonwood sev eral years ago, under the ministry of Raymond (’33) and Mrs. Rogers (Del- mar Howard, ’33), Carl Mansfield was saved. He later became a student at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, and now he and Mrs. Mansfield' (May Ar- buthnot, ’31) are serving as mission aries in the Ozark Mountains. They have a little son. Mr. and Mrs. Rogers, who have been serving in the Belgian Congo under the Unevangelized Tribes Mission, are reported to be on their way home with their two-year-old twin sons for furlough. Mrs. Donald E. Spur- beck (Doris M., Kenyon, ’38) as a girl of sixteen was saved through personal work when she called to see the house trailer that Mr. and Mrs. Graves used in connection with meetings they were holding in a schoolhouse in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. She later attended the Bible Institute of Los Angeles and Is now serving with Mr. Spurbeck (B. Th. ’40) at Leevining, Calif., in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Mr. and Mrs. Spurbeck are missionaries under the Philippian Faith Mission. Varied Testimony Juanita Wright, ’37, has been serving since last fall as Director of Christian Education at the Fruitvale Presbyterian Church, 2725 Hopkins, Oakland, Calif. Mrs. William Goold (Marjory L. Thomson, ’39), who served for most of last year as secretary at the Long Beach headquarters of the Navigators Chris tian Service Men, is assisting Richard W. (’39) and Mrs. Hightower (Helen L. Brundage, ’39) in the organization’s cen ter at San Diego, Calif., where Mr. and Mrs. Hightower have recently moved to larger quarters for the work, at 2915 Boundary St., San Diego. Mr. Goold, a member of the Navigators, is storekeep er on the U. S. S. “Crosby.” Manford G. (’24) and Mrs. Gutzke are living in Atlanta, Ga., where Mr. Gutzke is pastor of the Kirkwood Pres byterian Church. He also teaches in Co lumbia Seminary,
Janet Wheeler, who has been in the Covina Hospital, Covina, Calif., since an automobile accident in November, is making definite progress toward recov ery, but probably will remain in the hospital for at least part of March. K. Owen White, ’22, pastor of the Kirkwood Baptist, Church, Howard St. and Delano Dr. N. E., Atlanta, Ga., has been leading his congregation in a church-wide study of the Gospel of Luke, to continue for a period of six months. Dr. White writes that the Lord is bless ing the work arid that during the past church year 268 persons were received into church membership. On the first Sunday of October, the attendance in the Sunday-school was 1,993. Mrs. White was Pearl Woodworth of the Class of 1925. E. Rexford (’27) and Mrs. Smith (Grace H. Weller, ’26), P. O. Box 201, Visalia, Calif., have been led to secure a small vacant store for a center for Mexican work at Visalia, to be known as “Calvary .Gospel Mission.” Mr. and Mrs. Smith and their Children have been using the two rear rooms and their house trailer as living quarters. They previously served among Mexicans of Coachella Valley for several years. Joe (’38) and Mrs. Kopp, Box 92, Hart ford, Wash., who were married in Au gust, are serving in the Hartford Bap tist Church, Hartford, Wash., where Mr. Kopp has been pastor since March, >1940. Former Biola students ordained to the gospel ministry at Westlake Cal vary Church, Los Angeles, Calif., on January 6 included Keith Fields, ’40; Eldon Johnson, ’38; Joseph E. Nash, B. Th. ’39, and Joseph Olson. Eldon (’38) and Mrs. Johnson (Opal Sherier, ’37) sailed from Wilmington, Calif., on January 11, for service under the Bolivian Indian Mission.
