Design Technology Program JOSEPH C. WILSON MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT ACADEMY
REQUIRED COURSES
9071 - THE WORLD OF TECHNOLOGY (.5 cr.) This comprehensive course introduces students to the dynamic world of technology, emphasizing how technological advancements shape our lives and society. Through hands-on learning and real-world applications, students will explore engineering design, physical systems, computer technology, biological and chemical processes, and the evolving role of technology in human progress. With an emphasis on sustainability, problem-solving, and innovation, students will develop skills in project management, multimedia communication, and systems design. The course also examines the positive and negative impacts of technology on individuals, society, and the environment.
6519 - DESIGN DRAWING/PRODUCTION (1 cr.) MCC: MET-101 Technical Graphics or MET 121 Computer Aided Drafting/Design
Design and Drawing for Production is a pre-engineering class designed to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of engineering and design. Students will have the opportunity to explore real life applications of the skills needed to enter engineering and design team fields using computer graphics and simulations. This course is dual credit with MCC as long as the HS Teacher is dual credit credentialed. 3981 - IB DESIGN TECHNOLOGY (1 cr.) This course allows students to gain an understanding of the link between innovation and creativity. Students will discover limitations and possibilities of solutions through prototyping and testing, while focusing on the objectives which identify the end user’s needs and wants. Inquiry and problem- solving are at the heart of the subject. Students will use the design cycle as a tool, structuring their inquiry and analysis of problems, the development of feasible solutions, and the testing and evaluation of the solution.
3982—IB DESIGN TECHNOLOGY II (1 cr.) Prerequisite: 3981 IB Design Technology
The second year of this course continues to have students explore the link between innovation and creativity. Students will discover limitations and possibilities of solutions through prototyping and testing, while focusing on the objectives which identify the end user’s needs and wants. Inquiry and problem-solving are at the heart of the subject. Students will use the design cycle as a tool, structuring their inquiry and analysis of problems, the development of feasible solutions, and the testing and evaluation of the solution.
5139 - CAREER & FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT (.5 or 1.0 credit) (Virtual is 1.0) MCC: ECO 103 MCC - Personal Money Mgmt. This course provides students the opportunity to determine their personal interests and then research what careers they could potentially pursue based on these interests. Students also learn about financial management both on a personal and business level as well.
This course is dual credit with MCC as long as the HS Teacher is dual credit credentialed and the student is taking the 1 credit HS course.
