9171- TLI Seminar I Credits: 1.0 Course Credit Prerequisite: NA
Course Description: In this first class in TLI you will get an opportunity to focus on the nature of teaching and learning. We will study the multiple intelligence theory and you will learn to identify you own strengths and limitations as a learner. Together with your TLI classmates you will focus on: organizational skills, peer mediation, cultural and interpersonal awareness, and team building. In TLI I you will visit and observe different elementary school programs in the Rochester City School District throughout the school year.
9172 - TLI Seminar II Credits: 1.0 Course Credit Prerequisite: 9171 - TLI Seminar I
Course Description: In this 10th grade seminar, we will study issues in education and the organization of schools. The second level teaching course continues our focus on teaching and learning as we look at lesson plan design and writing, improve our skills at building community, and opportunities to practice presenting in front of various audiences. You will study your own community, researching the strengths and challenges of your neighborhoods. Following your research, you will work collaboratively in teams to create your version of the ‘Ideal School” for the children in our community. In TLI II you will visit two different elementary schools where you will observe and shadow a specific teacher and classroom both times.
9173 - TLI Seminar III Credits: 1.0 Course Credit Prerequisite: 9172 - TLI Seminar II
Course Description: In this 11th grade seminar, we continue our focus on teaching and learning as we look at human development, brain-based learning and psychology as it relates to teaching and learning. You will study the role education plays in our society with an emphasis on issues of equity in our system. You will study the role race, class, gender, and disability play in education. As a class we will look at the role government and our political system plays in how our current system is setup and through a mock trial and a series of debates, explore possible solutions to problems in our educational system. In TLI III you will return to elementary school classrooms during the second semester to observe and shadow a different teacher and classroom.
9174 - TLI Seminar IV Credits: 1 Course Credit/ 1.0 College Credit, MCC Intro to Teaching - EDU 100 Prerequisite: 9173 - TLI Seminar III
Course Description: In the first semester of this 12th grade seminar you will begin to prepare for your role as a professional in the workplace. You will develop skills in lesson and unit planning, lesson organization, preparation of materials, delivery of instruction, classroom management and assessments of classroom performance. You will study educational philosophies in order to develop your own a self-reflective statement of your beliefs about teaching and learning. Second semester of the seminar, you will complete a paid internship. Within the classroom setting, you will work with individual students, small groups, and large groups; preparing and executing lessons with the guidance of their cooperating teacher.
5139 - Career & Financial Management Credits: 1.0 Course Credit ECO 103 MCC - Personal Money Management
Course Description: This course provides students the opportunity to determine their personal interests and then research what careers they could potentially pursue based on these interests. Students also learn about financial management both on a personal and business level as well. This course is dual credit with MCC as long as the HS Teacher is dual credit credentialed. Dual credit is not available when taken as a virtual course.
