REQUIRED COURSES
3316 - Vision Care I Credits: 1.0 Course Credit
Course Description: In this first course you will be introduced to the anatomy of the human eye and sight(vision). From there you will study the various causes of poor vision health. Once you understand the eye and vision issues you will then learn how lenses are used to help correct these issues. You then work hands-on with the tools required for vision correction, learning to use the various machines used to manufacturing prescription eyewear. Throughout the course you will complete a variety of projects to help you gain knowledge of the optician and the roles they play in the workforce. The final project in this class will be you manufacturing a corrective pair of glasses from a doctor’s prescription. Upon completion of this first Vision Care course you will be eligible for internships, job references to local ophthalmic manufacturing companies.
3565 - Vision Care II Credits: 1.0 Course Credit Prerequisite: 3316 - Vision Care I
Course Description: In this second level Vision Care course you will expand on the skills you learned in year one on the various machines needed to make glasses: lensometer, blocker and edger. You will start to take on a leadership role in the program as you complete a variety of projects to further your knowledge including manufacturing multifocal lenses, repairing broken glasses, and maintaining the manufacturing equipment in the lab. You will work with visiting eye doctors as you assist them with patient care: measuring patient’s pupillary distances, helping patients to pick out frames that fit their facial structure and maintaining patient records (prescriptions). As part of these visits you will learn appropriate safeguards to protect the privacy of protected health information as outlined in federal HIPPA regulations. Throughout the year you will manufacture glasses that fit an optometrist supplied prescription, and dispense fabricated glasses to students.
3560 - Vision Care III Credits: 1.0 Course Credit Prerequisite: 3565 - Vision Care II
Course Description: This final class in Vision Care is an extension of Vision Care II. As a student in VC III you will continue to hone your skills in manufacturing various types of glasses but will also learn how to apply anti-reflective coating to lenses, tint lenses, and develop and print 3D versions of frames for personal choice. As in Vision Care II you will be responsible for working with eye doctors during the vision screening events that are scheduled. However, you will take on the role of manager, helping to lead and direct students in Vision Care II as they participate in these visits. As an exit performance portfolio piece you will develop plans for an optical store including: layout of the store, equipping of the store with necessary machines and tools as well as determining frame selection and inventories.
XXXX - Vision Care IV Credits: 1 Course Credit Prerequisite:
Course Description: Vision Care IV- Clinical Externship is the outside clinical experience for the Vision Care Health Science pathway. The goal of this class is to allow students the opportunity to make connections between the skills and knowledge gained in their health science classrooms and the healthcare industry they are studying. This course is designed to further develop and apply professional knowledge and skills in Vision Care. The students in this course will review and build on all the information and skills presented in the previously required courses in this CTE pathway.
5139 - Career & Financial Management Credits: 1.0 Course Credit ECO 103 MCC - Personal Money Management This course provides students the opportunity to determine their personal interests and then research what careers they could potentially pursue based on these interests. Students also learn about financial management both on a personal and business level as well. This course is dual credit with MCC as long as the HS Teacher is dual credit credentialed. Dual credit is not available when taken as a virtual course.
