An Anti-Conversionist Campaign A writer in a recent copy of the “ Jewish Chronicle” pays unconscious tribute to the success of the Jewish Missions when he writes as follows: “ The attempts which have been made of late in the col umns of your esteemed journal to rouse British Jewry to a realization Of its responsibilities in the matter of counter acting the energetic activity of the Conversionists, have so far remained fruitless. “ I have reason to believe, however, that appeals made in your columns from time to time have found an echo among our brethren on the other side of the Atlantic, and that a responsible Jewish organization in America is now gathering material with a view of ascertaining the extent of the damage done, or likely to be done, by the Conver sionists, and devising means of defence. “ I have no doubt that as soon as an influential body of Jews in the United States will have taken the lead in this matter, Jewish organizations in other countries will readily come forward to give a helping hand, and it may not be long before an international Jewish body will be formed to deal with the problem that is becoming every day more grave and more menacing. “ In the meantime, it seems to me that your influential organ would render a great service by keeping English- speaking Jews informed of the latest developments in the field of missionary enterprise among the Jews of the world, and by shedding as much light as possible on the methods employed by the Conversionist agencies in their efforts to capture the souls of the ignorant and the unwary. “ Why should not a conference of representatives of Jew ish organizations be called for the purpose of considering the whole problem and discussing the most effective means of launching an anti-conversionist campaign? Is it not high time that some such step should be taken by some Jewish authority or organization? “ So far as this country is concerned, it seems to me that the policy of ignoring the activity of the missionaries has already led to deplorable results.” “ Judea Capta” Lives Again Dr. Chaim Weizmann, foremost Zionist leader of the world, recently addressed a meeting of “ Zionists” here in Los Angeles, in which he plead the cause of the upbuild ing of Palestine and made a plea on behalf of the “ Palestine Foundation Fund.” Dr. Weizmann, under the above title, is quoted in “ The New Palestine” as follows: “What is being created today in Palestine is not only a refuge for the thousands who will come or are coming in. It is a refuge for the martyred Jewish soul which has been floating between heaven and earth for thousands of years without rest, but which is beginning to find rest at last on the soil of Palestine. Its consummation is perhaps symbolized best by one thing— our Hebrew University. “ This modest little University, the foundation stone of which was laid in 1918, to the sound of guns, within ten miles of the front, is being erected on Mount Scopus, one of the hills which overlook Jerusalem. On this very moun tain, thousands of years ago, stood the tent of Titus, and before that tent were led the prisoners out of Jerusalem into captivity. Over this very hill on which today stand the first institutes of the future University, passed our judges, our kings, our prophets, our young children, our young soldiers— into captivity and oblivion. “ Great Rome had proclaimed ‘Judea Capta, Judea is finished.’ The mighty Roman state swept over little Judea. Of Titus nothing is left but a marble arch which is the admiration of tourists in Rome. “ But Judea' Capta lives again, and from this very hill a new siege will be directed against Jerusalem, not with guns
