‘Partant pour la Syrie’, Leaving for Syria, was the unofficial national anthem of the Second French Empire, used between 1852 and 1870. The song was inspired by Napoleon’s campaign in Egypt and Syria. The music was composed by Hortense de Beauharnais (1783-1837), and the lyrics were written by Alexandre de Laborde (1773-1842), in or around 1807. It represents a chivalric composition of the aspirations of a crusader knight in a style typical of the First French Empire.
