221 Johan Hendrik van Mastenbroek (1875-1945) Early morning on a quay in Rotterdam, possibly at the Leuvehaven signed and dated ‘JH v Mastenbroek 95’ (lower right) watercolour on paper, 46,5x31,5 cm
€2,000 - €3,000
Literature: -Peter van Beveren, ‘Johan Hendrik van Mastenbroek, Impressionist in de nieuwe tijd’, Rotterdam 2005, ill. p. 38. Provenance: -Private collection Ir John Henry Wilton (1869-1934), thence by descent to the present owner. This watercolour belongs to the early works of the painter. At that time, Van Mastenbroek usually painted old parts of Rotterdam: views of the Leuvehaven, Oudehaven, Oudehoofdsplein, Scheepmakershaven, and other cityscapes of the inner city that has since disappeared. Family tradition holds that Van Mastenbroek regularly visited the Wilton shipyards in Rotterdam to find inspiration and make sketches. It is believed that the young painter gave his watercolour ‘Rotterdams Stadsgezicht’ to John Henry Wilton - who became a close friend of his over the years - as a token of gratitude.
