Provenance: -In the collection of the family of the present owners for at least 100 years. The central panel reflects a late interpretation of a lost yet widely copied ‘Descent from the Cross’ by Rogier van der Weyden (1399-1464) (Friedländer Vol. II, no. 97a). Wings featuring individual saints were subsequently added to this fundamentally fifteenth- century composition. Please compare to a triptych with a similar composition by the Master of the Holy Blood (Early 16th Century) in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, inv. no. 17.187a–c.

Rubens made this design for a ceiling painting in the Banqueting House, the building used for royal receptions in Whitehall in London. England (in red) is unified by Amor with Scotland (in white).
