And I hear Him say to me, as He said to Philip, whose heart was burdened with the same doubt, “ Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?” (John 14:9). The second great fact upon which the Christian bases his faith is the fact of the Bible. Take from the Christian his Bible and he could not be a Christian. All he knows about God, about Jesus Christ, about himself, he knows from that Book. He would be a spiritual ignoramus without the Bible. He would be adrift on the ocean of skepticism and agnosticism and atheism. He would be like a ship without a rudder driven by the wind and tossed. He would be like a train without an engineer hurtling through the darkness. He would be like a rocket-ship without a pilot streaking into oblivion if he had no Bible. But the Christian does possess a Bible which the science of archeology every day confirms as to its historical ac curacy. ary history substantiates because the Bible centuries ago predicted the events taking place in the world today. He has a Bible that throws light on the great mysteries of life and death, and that claims with a ring of assurance to have the answers to man’s most puzzling questions, and the solution to man’s most baffling problems. And shall the Chris tian give up his Bible? Should he sur render this blest Book? The fact of the Bible comes to me with irresistible persuasion when I feel my faith growing shaky. As long as I have my Bible, I know that I am right and I know I can be a follower of Jesus Christ and keep my head high. I make no apology for the Bible. Because of my Bible I have a reason for my faith. The third fact is the fact of the church. Because God is real, Jesus Christ is real, and the Bible is real, we have the church. I have referred to the law of cause and effect. Here it is again! What prompted the early disciples and mil lions like them through the years to embrace Jesus Christ as offered to them in the New Testament, when to follow Him meant certain persecution and per haps death? Surely it was the inescap able fact of the Christian faith—the fact of God, of Christ, of the Bible! Why is it that the church has per severed down through the centuries in spite of dungeon, fire and sword? Why is the church the oldest living institu tion in the world today? Because Chris tianity is true, because there is a God, because there is a Christ, and because there is a Bible. The fourth great fact that proves the reality of the Christian faith is the fact of Christian experience. Jesus said, “ Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Millions have come and millions have found rest. The Saviour said, “ Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come.” The Holy Ghost came, and mul titudes found a new power they had never experienced before. The Church was bom, and millions have shared in that same power, and have known the blessed presence of the Holy Spirit. This fact cannot be denied. The Bible says, “ If any be in Christ he is a new creation.” Millions have found this true: they have come to Jesus Christ, by simple faith they have em braced Him, and they have discovered the transforming power of Christ in their lives. I say to you today that I dare not give up my Christian faith. I dare not denounce my God. I dare not reject the Saviour. I dare not repudiate the Bible. These are truths that are confirmed in my soul and which I cannot escape. No one needs, therefore, because of fear, like the spies of old, to rob his soul of the benefits of the gospel. I urge you who fear to do as Caleb did and as Joshua did, and as multitudes of brave men and women have done—and are do ing—press on to Jesus Christ. Avail yourself of Him and with Him all things are yours.
