Lord’s death, the cup of their iniquity was at last full, and they received a heavy chastisement for their many sins. Jerusalem was destroyed. The temple was burned and the Jews themselves were scattered over the face of the earth. The kingdom of God was taken from them and given to the church. In First Peter 2:9 we read, “ But ye are a chosen generation, a peculiar people: that ye should show forth the praises of Him Who hath called you out of dark ness into His marvelous light.” In this dispensation the Lord has committed to the church the business of caring for His vineyard (v. 41), of being His wit nesses in the world. Thus the stone, Christ Jesus, which was rejected by the Jews has become the foundation-stone and head of the corner for the church. (See 1 Cor. 3:11; Eph. 2:20-22; 1 Pet. 2:4,5.) The streets of Jerusalem were lined with boys .and girls, men and women! Jesus was coming to town! He had sent His disciples to bring an ass and colt to Him that He might ride into the city upon the ass. The disciples placed their outer wraps upon the donkey’s back for the Saviour to sit upon. Eagerly the crowds waved palm branches, spread their garments in the way for the ass to walk upon, and sang songs of joy. “Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.” At the end of the ride through the crowded streets, God’s Son entered the temple. His heart was grieved; He was even angry at that which was being done in His Father’s house. Animals were being sold there and moneychangers were dis honestly doing business in the sacred building. God’s Son drove the wicked people out of the temple and said unto them, “ My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.” After the Saviour had cleansed His Father’s house, the blind and the lame came to Him there and were healed. How different the temple was then! Rather than the noise of animals and the voice of angry men, there was peace and quietness where all could worship God as He desired. Sometimes boys and girls forget that God’s house, the church, is a place of worship and of prayer. Their loud voices or their lack of reverence during the services keep others from hearing God’s Word. Perhaps someone who would have received the Saviour if he had been able to hear the sermon will be lost because some boys and girls forgot that they were in the house of God. Pray that God will help you to be quiet and wor shipful and reverent in His house. Pray that you will gladly come into His presence there to work and worship in a way that will please Him and that will help others to love Him too. Helps for the Children A Visit to the Temple Matt. 21 Memory Selection: “ Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing” (Psalm 100:2).
