In these uncertain times the question is, ‘In what direction are we headed?’ If we are going the wrong way, the last thing we need to do is get there faster or more efficiently. If we’re headed in the right direction, we don’t want that direction decided through unfocused or incompetent op- erational action taken or sacrificed in a strategic vacuum! To that Aristotle states, “We are what we repeatedly do.’ The goal is to be a proactive order-maker, not a reactive order-taker. “Consider the imminent incompetence and infighting in any of the multi-billion-dollar boondoggles by government bureaucracies. The very people who most depend on an array of policy makers' programs, mandates, or subsidies will not get the meaningful results promised to them. But then they vote for them again anyway. Raising taxes isn’t the problem, spending is! In other words, a shortage of tax revenue is not the issue, but the way the revenue is spent is! What we are has become more important than what we do. Everybody knows jobs and taxes are the real chess pieces in today’s data-driven economic gamesmanship between politicians and America’s cherry-picked board- rooms. “Joe Biden claiming to cut spending or lower taxes, is like the arsonist saying he will put out the fire. Legislators love hidden taxes, like the well-intentioned corporate tax. They will also tell us the evil rich and big corporations must pay their ‘fair share.’ Today’s results? The flurry of U.S. tax codes treats taxpayers, including for small and midsize businesses, like blood banks in vampire movies. For ex- ample, excessive regulations stifle economic growth, raise prices, and increase budget deficits to $68 Billion in Cali- fornia in the last 18 months. It’s like ‘recycling on steroids.’ Yet, Cal Box Group leadership knows ‘healthy budgets re- quire spending discipline.’ “Large blue states like California with its 40 million peo- ple alongside, only 1.4 million manufacturing jobs aren’t competitive due to their overall cost of doing business. ‘From our experience, it is not unusual to have a sky rock- eting Cost of Goods Sold at over 80 percent, for corrugat- ed box makers west of the Rocky Mountains,’ says Chris Widera. “Currently, in our U.S. industry, supply chains bring vastly varying choices, but head winds of aggressive in- terest-rate increases with ballooning costs have curbed demand. All this while paper mill capacity is expanding by 2 million tons, and market related downtime to bal- ance oversupply and weak demand. There’s no wonder containerboard, sheet, and box customers are balking at paying extra, especially for commodity products with little value such as averted reliable service. “In the years of contributing to ‘Outlook,’ I often stated, ‘We are not here to be average.’ Thus, in an effect to con- tinue to be above average, our five manufacturing com- panies have prudently purchased in the last 18 months a Converter Outlook: Part I (CONT’D FROM PAGE 32)
