BANK OF MUM & DAD

CASE STUDY

MANCHESTER L&Q at Victoria Riverside

Located in Manchester’s Red Bank neighbourhood, L&Q at Victoria Riverside is ideally located within an urban area, offering easy access to the city’s cultural hotspots and just a short walk from Manchester Victoria station. The one and two bedroom apartments at the development form part of the wider Victoria North development which will comprise over 15,000 new homes.

Nicole , 26, and Alessia , 23, bought their first home together at Barratt London’s Eastman Village in Harrow last year. Both now emergency services workers, the young couple met while studying at the University in Bournemouth. When Nicole graduated, they split their time between Nicole’s parents’ home in Ealing and Bournemouth. They were excited to both be living in London when Alessia graduated and moved to live with her parents in Enfield, but their relationship still felt long distance as they were on opposite sides of the city. Nicole explains, “It was expensive constantly having to pay petrol and battling the M25. We were both so knackered from all the travelling and it was a real motivator for us to save up to move out. Both of us were keen to buy, rather than rent if we were going to move out.” The couple, who describe themselves as initially “clueless” and with “no idea how mortgages worked”, managed to save up for their deposit by using a mixture of the Government’s Help to Buy ISA, getting help from their family and using Barratt London’s Deposit Boost, which added an additional 5% to their deposit. Space was a big priority when choosing their new home and, for ease, a new build home felt like the sensible option. The couple’s new apartment is a large one bedroom apartment, in the perfect location. The pair, who commute for work, can now reach Euston in 12 minutes and Oxford Circus in under 30 minutes. Nicole says, “I already knew Harrow well having grown up in Ealing, it’s so easy to get around, it’s only a 10-minute walk to the Bakerloo Line and then you have Harrow-on-the-Hill which is on the Metropolitan Line. While we were both keen to move out, it was important for us to be close to our parents. We’re a 40-minute drive away from Alessia’s parents and just 20 minutes to mine.” Nicole and Alessia are getting to know the area and their neighbours. Nicole says, “We’ve found that there is always something going on. We were immediately added to a WhatsApp group and there was a ‘meet your neighbours’ breakfast.”
