NEW HOMES
SHINING BRIGHT! Editor Lynda Clark discovers a brand new development, Argenta in Silvertown, by Guinness Homes and is excited that it is part of one of London’s most ambitious regeneration projects
I am a sucker when it comes to names and so Silvertown really appeals to me as it sounds rather “glittery” and the name of the development, Argenta, which means silver in Latin and Spanish, is so clever! Silvertown is actually named after Samuel Silver who brought his waterproof clothing factory to the area in 1852. I always get excited when I go anywhere near the Royal Docks as it has something about it that is really fascinating. It is an area which is so well-connected with a wealth of different transport links including the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) from Pontoon Dock and the Elizabeth Line from Custom House and you can be in Canary Wharf, Stratford and Bank in under 25 minutes – that’s a quick commute! Plus the new Silvertown Tunnel links it to the Greenwich Peninsula and The O2 arena. Argenta is a landmark development for Guinness Homes and in the first phase there are 66 Shared Ownership one and two bedroom apartments available. Applications are open now and completion is due for autumn 2025. The first of the homes are set near the Grade II listed Silo D, with views across Silvertown and North Greenwich – perfect! I was very impressed by the high specification and these apartments are so spacious! Kitchens come with fully integrated appliances and a private balcony – perfect for that morning coffee or wind-down drink after work. Some of the apartments also have harbour-arm views and you really can’t do better than that! I was very interested that the future phases will include a town centre with shops,
restaurants, leisure facilities, bars and cafes creating a real sense of a new community, which I really love. Eventually there will be 430 homes across several phases offering one, two and three bedroom homes and there will also be business workspace and space for cultural and community events. Silvertown has a fascinating history and is an industrial hub, home to factories and refineries including Tate & Lyle – everyone must recognise the famous tin of golden syrup, which we pour over pancakes, porridge and puddings. The tin holds the world record for the oldest unchanged packaging and hasn’t altered since 1883. The quotation under the lion on the front
of the tin says “out of the strong came forth sweetness” and is worth remembering as it often comes up in quizzes. Plus, the transformation of Silvertown also includes the restoration of the historic Millennium Mills 20th century flour mill. It is so well appointed and if you fancy getting out and about to blow the cobwebs away then visit the Thames Barrier Park,Victoria Gardens or Gallions Point, which are great for exploring on foot or by bike and are home to plenty of fascinating wildlife. With a range of pubs and eateries including traditional fish and chips, Taiwanese, Indian, Italian, sushi and Mediterranean restaurants to name a few, you definitely won’t go hungry. What is so special about Argenta is that is blends heritage with a very bright new community. It is set to become an iconic east London neighbourhood and in my view that ticks just about every box. As I leave I am left with the thought that Silvertown really does shine bright and Argenta is a perfect little star glowing over the London skyline! Price for a one bedroom apartment will be from £390,000. A two bedroom apartment starts from £520,000.
