A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF Peter As a Warwick student, you have a lot of flexibility on your week, with plenty of time for extra-curricular activities. I love sport, and spend a lot of the time involved in the various clubs and societies, or just playing casually with friends on and around campus. There’s so much to do to relax and have fun away from studies at Warwick, something that really stood out to me from day one.
WEDNESDAY Now for one of my favourite weekdays at Warwick. I start by giving myself a well-earned lie in to reward myself for successfully making my 9am the day before. After my afternoon workshop on campus, I meet up with the Tennis Society for ‘Social Play’. As the name suggests, this was a great way to meet new people with similar interests – as well as utilising Warwick’s unbelievable sports facilities. I like to spend the evening with friends in The Clarendon in Leamington, which offers a great pub quiz and an even better student discount. THURSDAY These can be a bit of a mix for me – be it be solo-study on my assignments, meeting my group project team, or preparing my interview and employability skills with the Careers and Employer Relations team. As a member of Warwick Consulting society, I like to meet up with other members to explore case studies, and enjoy a pizza. The football team I support have unfortunately been playing in the Europa League this season, which means my Thursday nights are fully booked. I’ll usually watch with my flatmates in our kitchen, or head out to watch it – depending on how confident I am… FRIDAY I’m particularly enjoying my Fridays during my second term, as I have Fridays completely off - so regular long weekends! This means I can organise trips away – most often to visit family and friends in London, which is only an hour or so on the train from Leamington – and even less from Coventry, which is one of the beauties of Warwick for me. If I’m staying local though, I’ll usually enjoy a game of tennis, football, or whatever my friends fancy – to see in a much-deserved weekend.
SUNDAY If I’ve got no other plans (which isn’t so often recently), I try to meet up with the Tennis society for ‘Social and Match Play’ day. This is a flexible day that you can tailor to suit you – either a relaxed rally and a chat, or a competitive match if you prefer. On a Sunday evening, I’ll get my laundry done and organise my schedule for the week ahead. I also see this as a window of opportunity for me to spend some time preparing a nice meal, bulk-cooking lunches for the week, or trying something new. I’ll get my bag ready for the morning, ready to get up and see what next week at Warwick has in store!
MONDAY I like to get on campus early, and either attend a lecture, or go to the Sports Hub for a gym session to start the week off right. I’ll usually then grab a coffee from the WBS Café, and head to my afternoon seminars. I’ll usually study in the Postgraduate lounge, or sit in the leafy communal areas outside with friends. The Warwick campus is a lovely place to be, particularly when the sun’s out – which is more often than it does back home in Ireland, so I take advantage of that!
Peter Shaw MSc Management (2024–2025)
SATURDAY Naturally, the weekend days offer the most variety as a student. There’s usually something fellow members of Warwick’s Irish Society are up to in and around campus, so I’ll take the bus in if I fancy it. Away from campus though, most recently my flatmates and I have taken to a (very casual) Saturday jog. We’ve found Warwick is a beautiful area for a run along the canal, before stopping off to see Warwick Castle, and grab a coffee and pastry from one of the local cafes.
Experimenting with recipes
TUESDAY My Tuesdays mean an early start and early finish. They're typically a series of workshops, with sizeable breaks in between, which I usually use to visit friends that stay on campus, or meet up with other members of the Warwick Business School Society. I hop on the bus from campus to my place in Leamington Spa, and try to cook a new recipe where I can. I’ve been experimenting with various curries and fajitas recently, as my Tuesday specials.
