A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8

It has been another busy week again for Year 8. During tutor time we have been exploring cultural connections and learning to understand the importance of culture and how it shapes our ideas and futures. It has also been Book Week in school with students encouraged to share their favourite authors and book genres. As part of Book Week a team of keen readers from Year 8 took part in a ‘Battle of the Books’ challenge against five other schools, organised by Richmond Libraries. Our team did us proud, finishing a close second place to Grey Court School - with only one point between them. Great effort team! The event was supported by the Deputy Mayor. Thursday evening was the Summer Music Concert and the theme this year was Superheroes. It was fantastic to see Year 8s performing so well and it was an excellent display of the wonderful talent that we have here at Waldegrave! Well done to all that took part. You will be able to see photos of this and many of the events from this term in the School Magazine to be published next week. Last week our talented Year 8s Cricketers combined with Year 7 to take part in the Chance to Shine Cricket Tournament and did themselves and the school proud by winning the tournament - A fantastic achievement! See full match report in Sports Fixtures section on page 4. In other sporting achievements Mabel M has been se- lected to to take part in the Hockey Mentors Project where young hockey players are supported to achieve their potential. This is a highly competitive squad to get into and we are proud of her! Our top three epraise forms this week are as follows 8PUN, 8FLE and 8PIR so very well done to those forms. Topping our epraise individual leaderboard this week is Ashlyn T 8FFR, Libby H 8FFR and Haley T- well done! It is wonderful to see Year 8 demonstrating the enjoy, achieve and empower aspects of school life and continuing to accumulate well earned epraise points. With the warm temperatures continuing to rise - students have been enjoying the beautiful outdoor areas we have available at the school. Please encourage your child to apply sunscreen, bring a sun hat and a water bottle which can be refilled at any of our water stations around the school. I look forward to our final week of the summer term with our wonderful year group and wish you all a fantastic summer break!

MRS LYDDON, HEAD OF YEAR 8

‘Arsenic For Tea’ by Robin Stevens A murder-mystery, with two curious girls as the main protagonists – Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong. As chaos unfolds around them, they try to solve the clues like full-on detectives, but unpaid, of course. Daisy’s mother throws a tea party, with the whole family invited but when one of them mysteriously falls ill with food poisoning and then passes away Wells and Wong are suspicious. Who could have done it, and how? The book is a thrilling read, as you unpick the clues with our protagonists. To suspect a character and find out the truth is a whole adventure without having to leave home. I picked this book from the series specifically because of how suspenseful it was. Almost every character seemed like the culprit, every single one of them acted edgy, so it was even harder to work out. This is the second book in the series, so I recommend reading the first book first, but there are other books in the series as well, so if you enjoyed this one, there are many more to enjoy! BOOK OF THE MONTH
