T he race this year at Quiet Waters Park was different from the ones that have taken place here in the past. Instead of having the registration and post-race activities in a cozy indoor setting, we were forced to conduct the entire event outdoors due to a scheduled renovation of the Blue Heron Center. The race started and ended at the Sassa- fras Pavilion, but at least we were able to use the fireplace there, and that helped temper the early morning chill that enveloped the park. By the time the race started, the tem- perature crept up to 46 degrees. Scott Koehler was again the winner with a time of 54:47. Mr. Consistency finished 2nd in this event last year after placing first in both 2021 and 2022. U’tonna Brown was the first female runner with a time of 1:07:34. Maksym Petrenko (57:56) was the first male masters runner, while Samantha Cole won the female masters division with a time of 1:08:21. There were 131 finishers this year, which was a slight increase over the past two years, but still less than we had prior to the pandemic. I want to thank Bill Frazier , of Annapolis Charm City Run , for donating the first-place

gift cards to the overall and masters winners. All of the volunteers, as always,

greatly contributed to the success of this event, and several of them went the extra mile. Delia Edelmann, Will Myers and Charlie Muskin tended to the aforementioned fireplace to make sure it burned brightly throughout our event. Dan Symancyk , who was the timer, also spent several days measuring and marking the new route for the race. Ted Logothetti assisted in loading the trucks the day before the race, and helped me put out the mile markers. Tom Lyden also helped load and unload the trucks and set up the cones and water stops. He also positioned the course monitors before the start of the race. Tom was the super volunteer for this event! We always offer this race free of charge, to our members who pre-register, as a way of saying thanks for supporting our club. I hope you can join us on Sunday, December 14, 2025, for our next Anniversary Run and thank you for your continued support.

Metric Marathon 2024 BY WILL MYERS

T his year’s Metric saw 149 enthusiastic runners head to the starting line. Many knew from past experience there would be 16+ miles of long straight sections, rolling hills, and at the end some challenging climbs. Although cool in the morning, the weather warmed up quickly and proved difficult for some of the participants. The good news is that all runners who started the race finished. Our male overall top finisher was Andre Faigel , a repeat from last year, with a time of 1:40:29. The first female finisher was Lindsey Weinzierl with a time of 2:04:11. Our male Masters winner was Maksym Petrenko at 1:46:37 and our female Masters winner was Jill May finishing in 2:10:34. At this year’s race I truly served as the Race “Director” as I had shoulder replacement sur- gery two weeks prior to the event. I can’t say enough good things about our volunteer crew.

Many were veterans of previous rac-

es and knew what had to be done in order to have a successful race. Their hard work and willingness to do whatever was needed was greatly appreciated. I simply could not have managed the race without their dedication. Special thanks to the Naval Academy Marathon Team , who use the Metric as their annual fall marathon training run and help make the race a success through their ongo- ing support. I’m already looking forward to next year’s race. It is rewarding to see so many Striders make this an annual event. If you haven’t run the Metric in the past, put it on your calendar for the future. I hope you have a healthy and successful year of running and look forward to seeing you in 2025.
