Danny Twitchell, Environmental Stewardship Award
By Stefan Krogseng It is my pleasure to nominate Lloyd Daniel (Danny) Twitchell for this year’s Environmental Stewardship Award for his exemplary leadership and dedication to the highest-level environmental standards. Danny started as an Environmental Specialist in 2006 working at Donlin Gold until he transferred to Turquoise Ridge in Nevada as an Environmental Specialist II, where he stayed from 2015-2017. After three years, he returned to his home state and Donlin as a Community Relations Coordinator, educating the in-region population of Western Alaska, and advocating for responsible development in industry before finding his way back to the environmental department where he currently leads the on-site Environmental Team. I have had the pleasure of working with Danny for the last three years at Donlin and consider him a mentor and friend. In these few years he has taught me and numerous other colleagues the best practices for reducing environmental impact and how to be an engaged steward of my environment. He emphasizes that environmental stewardship is not just for environmental professionals, but all in industry. He strives to spread the understanding of how good environmental practices are paramount for the success of companies and industry alike. Donlin’s Environmental Team works hand in hand with all departments and contractors to reduce environmental impact, monitor and improve current operations, and provide guidance for working with regulatory agencies. Whether that is a drip of

diesel or a release to containment, Danny not only provides solutions above and beyond industry standard but also works across departments to provide forward- looking prevention. Throughout Danny’s long tenure with Donlin, he has presented a significant commitment to sustainable, environmentally responsible development. Not only is he able to adapt to an ever changing and fast paced industry, but he is also capable of working in extreme conditions while obtaining exceptional results. Whether that is winter water sampling at -40 degrees, providing leadership and oversite during the
regular drilling season, or traveling to remote communities to assist with education and outreach efforts, Danny puts his all into his work with an unparalleled vigor. There is no challenge too large or too difficult. Although Danny is the Environmental Lead, he fills many additional technical roles and brings his signature enthusiasm and dedication to the company, region, and people. He motivates, inspires, and educates all those around him. Danny Twitchell continues to lend his expertise to improving the standard of environmental excellence and is an asset to the Alaska Mining Industry.
