Take a Hike As the warmth of summer arrives, opportunities to spend time outdoors abound in Martinsburg and Berkeley County. Folks looking to head off the beaten path will find plenty of hiking trails here. Try out the Tuscarora Trail , which is actually a long spur off of the Appalachian Trail. A large portion of the trail ’s 33 miles winds through the 23,000-acre Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area , where you’ll also encounter Sleepy Creek Lake —a 205-acre impoundment that is nestled among the rolling hills and is the perfect destination for a day on the water. Paddle around in a canoe or kayak, or do a bit of fishing by the lake shores—you may be greeted by one of our local beavers, otters, or soaring bald eagles, and you won’t be disappointed with the incredible views. Several footpaths lead away from the Tuscarora Trail, including the Brush Creek Trail , the Meadow Branch Trail , the Old Still Trail , and the Pee Wee Point Trail . But one of the most beautiful and shortest of the area’s trails is Devil’s Nose . Along the route you’ll enjoy intriguing rock formations, towering rhododendrons, a waterfall, and fast water on its way down the mountain to Sleepy Creek Lake.

Visitors can also enjoy the county’s Poor House Farm Park , with miles of biking and hiking trails and a fully stocked pond. Fresh Pickin’s Summer sun means a plethora of fresh fruits and vegetables, and there are plenty of farm-fresh markets in the area

Stop by Orr’s Farm Market for an extensive selection of fresh produce and the seasonal option to pick your own berries, cherries, and grapes, depending on the month.

Also stop in at Butler’s Farm Market for freshly picked produce, jams, jellies, and fresh-baked pies.

Try the West Virginia wines, farm fresh produce, fresh- baked pies and bread, local dairy, and grass-fed meats at Taylor’s Farm Market.

Or visit a West Virginia Conservation Farm of the Year honoree— Kitchens Farm Market —for fresh peaches, nectarines, and apples and natural beef.
