Parkham Wood House Designed in 1960 by the innovative Devon-based architect Mervyn Seal, the house is part of a small collection of similarly designed homes in the Torbay area. Perched dramatically on a cliff face, the three-bedroom house is distinguished by extensive glazing, butterfly roofs, and a bold modernist aesthetic. Listed Grade II in 2009, the building was recognised for its exceptional exterior form and well-preserved interiors, including timber-clad ceilings, bespoke shelving, and a distinctive fishbone staircase. Our design approach was driven by a commitment to preserving the character and integrity of the original house. The single- storey extension, accommodating an additional bedroom and shower room, was carefully designed with a sloping roof that follows the existing architectural lines. Horizontal timber cladding was selected to complement the original material palette, ensuring a cohesive and respectful addition. As part of the refurbishment, the façade was restored, and the original Crittall windows were repaired. The interior was fully refurbished, with a new kitchen and bathroom installed, alongside a new heating system. The existing Parana pine ceilings were meticulously restored, and new louvres were added to the storage areas and guest bedroom. This sensitive yet contemporary intervention enhances the architectural significance of the house while ensuring its continued functionality as a modern home.
