Bull and Oyster Roast

Message from The Grand Knight

Good afternoon,

On behalf of the Knights of Columbus Santo Nino Council No. 9462, I would like to welcome you to our 2024 Bull and Oyster Roast at the Columbus Gardens. Many look forward to this Bull and Oyster Roast to sample the variety of entrees and assortment of Filipino desserts, to line dance for hours, and to catch up with old friends.

I want to recognize and congratulate the chairman of this event, Immediate Past Grand Knight Modesto Carbon, Jr. He has personally reached out and invited most of you to attend this event. I want to also thank his wife FFL Vivian Carbon for constructing the table center pieces and for decorating the hall. In addition, I would also want to thank our Worthy Financial Secretary Al Velasquez and his wife Norma Velasquez. They were the organizational team to receive RVSPs with payment, donations, payments for souvenir program ads. They were instrumental in efficiently checking in and getting our guests to their assigned tables. I also owe a big thank you to Dr. Rebecca Magno. She has been very generous with her time. She designed the printed and electronic versions of the invitations. She has also shared her creativity to layout and design the pages for our souvenir program. She has shared her talents with the Bayanihan, the Association of Philippine Physicians in Maryland, the Santo Niño Council, the Filipino Council of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, and of course Katipunan.

In addition, I want to recognize the officers and members of the Santo Niño Council for their countless hours of voluntary work done by for this event and for many of the charitable programs we do throughout the year. Those family, faith, life, and community programs are outlined in the pages of this souvenir program.

I hope you all have fun at our Bull and Oyster Roast. I hope you reacquaint with old friends, make new friends, and make great memories this afternoon.

Vivat Jesus,

Jay Penafiel, M.D. Grand Knight Knights of Columbus Santo Nino Council No. 9462

Message from The APPM

Good afternoon,

The Association of Philippine Physicians in Maryland (APPM) is organized exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes. The APPM promotes the science and art of medicine. The APPM helps to elevate the standards of medical education locally, nationally, and internationally. We promote the interest of healthcare professionals and the community it serves. Earlier this morning, the APPM organized and brought to you a medical education seminar on diabetes mellitus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, physician-diagnosed diabetes has increased from 11.3% in 2015 to 16.2% in 2020. There are over 38 million visits to physician offices with type 2 diabetes mellitus as the primary diagnosis. Over 100,000 deaths are attributed to diabetes yearly. Diabetes is ranked #8 cause of death in the United States. Over the past few years, novel therapies for diabetes such as the GLP-1 receptor agonists (i.e. Ozempic and Mounjaro) and the SGLT2 inhibitors (i.e. Farxiga and Jardiance) have helped patients gain better control of their diabetes. The SGLT2 inhibitors have also been added to guideline medical therapy for heart failure. Hence, this was the motivation to choose this topic. I want to thank Dr. Pete Stengel for his talk on diagnosis and treatment of diabetes in 2024, Aleli Frias, RN on her talk on “Living Well with Diabetes Mellitus,” and Dr. Arnel Tagle on his insights and clinical experience with use of GLP-1 receptor agonists for treating diabetes and obesity. Our “expert panel” comprised of Dr. Jing Beltran, Dr. Tony Escalante, Dr. Rebecca Magno, and Dr. Erica Wilson helped to enhance the conversation and teaching during the Q & A sessions. I also want to recognize Griely Persia, president of the PNA Maryland Chapter and Aleli Frias, former president of the PNA Maryland Chapter for their contribution in planning and participation in this educational endeavor.

I hope our organizations can continue to collaborate to make our Filipino-American community a healthier place.

Sincerely

Jay Penafiel, M.D., F.A.C.C. APPM

Bull and Oyster Roast

Message from The Immaculate Heart of Mary Church

Dear Friends,

It is a joy and a blessing once again to welcome you to today’s Bull and Oyster Roast, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Santo Nino Council. The Santo Nino Council is sponsoring today’s event, and has designated the proceeds to support various projects and charitable activities of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish. Throughout the world and right in our very own community, the Knights of Columbus are visible signs of the vibrancy and joy of the faith we share. In countless communities, and in countless ways, the Knights stand firm and proud, testifying in word and deed to the faith that we share. Their charitable efforts and outreach to those in need are a visible and tangible sign of the Lord’s grace and blessing among us. Time and again, the Knights of Columbus respond wholeheartedly in service to the Lord and to His Church.

Today’s event is an opportune time for me, in the name of our entire parish, to thank our Santo Nino Council for their ongoing and selfless service. They are, indeed, “In Service to One, and in Service to All.”

Allow me also to thank all of those taking part in today’s festivities. Your support is a great blessing and a visible sign of God’s goodness and providence made manifest. We thank you. With a thankful heart, and in gratitude to God, the source of every grace and blessing, I am,

Sincerely in the Lord,

Fr. Jeffrey S. Dauses Pastor Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Thomas More Pastorate

Installation of Officers for Santo Niño Council No.9462 Fraternal Year 2023 to 2024

Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church Towson, Maryland

The Installation of Council Officers stands as an annual reminder to council officers of their duty to shape and build the character of their members in the love of neighbor and love of God by offering and conducting charitable programs, which strengthens our parishes and builds up the Domestic Church. The life, health and strength of the council is dependent upon the actions of Catholic fraternal leaders taking action and working together.

COATS FOR KIDS (December 16, 2023) The Coats for Kids program was held at St. Bernadine Roman Catholic Church in Baltimore. The Santo Nino Council No. 9462 joined Cardinal Sheehan of Baltimore No. 205, Bishop Sebastian No. 5058, and St. Matthew's International No. 11787 for this District 32 event. Each council contributed at least $400. DD Erwin Lacanienta coordinated the efforts of the four councils to host the event. We had spaghetti and other entrees for lunch. PGK D'Gee Abad shopped, found great deals for coats, and procured 120 winter coats in various sizes in boy's, girl's, and adult's sizes. The distribution was very orderly and efficiently done by the team of PGK D'Gee Abad, SK Jessie Sayo, and Br. Jack Penafiel.
