Lower Energy Costs To Dampen Paper Pricing While the containerboard industry deals with growing supply and declining demand, economists expect a mod- eration in energy costs to help ease upward pricing pres- sure in the paper sector at large. “Prices in the paper and pulp industry have been run- ning about 18 percent higher than 2021, which is one of the more rapid increases among commodities,” said Jesse Rogers, an economist covering the sector at Moody’s An- alytics. “The key reason is that the paper industry is very energy intensive. The U.S. Energy Information Administra- tion (EIA) says of all the energy used by industry, 11 percent goes into paper and pulp production, making that sector the third largest user.” By June of this year, said Rogers, price escalations were starting to ease. “We’re projecting that by the first quarter of 2023 paper prices will be rising just 5.5 percent, which is a pretty big fall. In the background really is our forecast for oil prices, where we expect considerable easing based on the combination of rising US and OPEC supply and fall- ing demand caused by significant economic slowdowns in almost every major global region, but particularly China, the US, and the Euro zone.” Phillip M.
