“We see the global market as being increasingly well supplied,” said George Staphos, Senior Research Analyst covering paper, forest and packaging for Bank of Amer- ica. “Because capacity has grown while consumption has slowed, we believe containerboard pricing will remain flat through 2024.”

The new environment represents a profound shift from the heady days when COVID-19 forced homebound shop- pers to binge on the Internet. “During the pandemic there was a historic boom in U.S. box demand because of un- precedented government stimulus and a massive spend- ing shift from services to goods,” said Adam Josephson, Managing Director, Equity Research, KeyBanc Capital Markets Inc. “Because of those factors, box demand has jumped by six percent over the past two years.
