options. However, despite sourcing WKL from a sustain- able producer, the sustainability of these sheets is ques- tioned due to widespread misinformation that virgin fiber content, in any form, may render a package unsustainable. First, it is important to tackle these common miscon- ceptions about virgin fibers. Decades of recycling and de- forestation campaigns have consumers believing that any form of tree harvesting is ecologically irresponsible. With brands sensitive to consumer perceptions, they demand that suppliers include a minimum percentage of recycled content in their board. But, virgin fibers, when harvested sustainably, are naturally renewable, recyclable, com- postable, resource efficient, and contribute to the circular economy. Wood, where virgin fiber originates, is the only industrial-scale material that is 100 percent fully renew- able. When harvested sustainably, suppliers can maintain documented and certified origins of virgin fibers to ensure they come from sustainably managed forests. It is impossi- ble to determine the origin of recycled fibers. Virgin fibers are also naturally stronger and more inte- gral than recycled, so suppliers require less fiber to create packaging of equivalent strength. After many trips through the recycling process, recycled fibers become shorter and weaker. The incorporation of virgin fibers is mandatory to maintain the quality and strength of the recycling loop. So, recycled and virgin fibers are equally as important in the circular economy. If one corrugated box is produced with a top layer of sustainably-harvested coated virgin fiber WKL, recycled fluting, and a recycled backside layer, that brand’s pack- age is now able to better contribute to the circular econo- my. The recycled layers’ fibers are put back into circulation while the virgin WKL layer injects fresh, strong fibers into the recycling loop while optimizing printing and graphics. Second, a key sustainability benefit of paperboard packaging is that it can replace plastic packaging in many applications. Plastic packaging, particularly non-recycla- ble plastic packaging such as Styrofoam, is ecologically detrimental. WKL can play a role in replacing traditional Styrofoam inserts and forms used to protect a multitude of consumer goods. As e-commerce and improved con- sumer experiences simultaneously grow in popularity, this solution checks both boxes because it can protect prod- ucts during shipping while creating new consumer con- nections through effective design. Plus, Styrofoam comes
