fully formed, requiring considerable space during trans- portation, whereas WKL can be delivered flat, decreasing transportation volume. In terms of consumer experience, structures designed using WKL provide not only a more luxurious and tactile feel compared to squeaky Styrofoam, but can also include compartmentalized and internal spaces for accessories and other product components. Governments are now in the process of legislating a ban of Styrofoam. In the USA, Maryland was the first state to effectively ban the use of Styrofoam. As this happens, brands will need to turn to products such as WKL and con- sult with their suppliers’ packaging designers to develop

more environmentally friendly alternatives to non-recycla- ble plastic packaging. If brands continue the use of plas- tics at the going rate, by 2050 it is anticipated that plastic production will grow by 40 percent and the amount of plastic in our world’s oceans will outweigh the amount of fish that live there. Finally, after WKL is produced, it is typically sheeted, converted into corrugate, printed, die-cut, folded, glued, filled by the brand owner or their product producer, and then sold to the consumer. These steps in this value chain, make it more difficult for sustainability messaging to get through to the consumer—particularly in regards to recy- cled and virgin fiber. Value chain members should focus on providing ver- ifiable facts and assume the role of educating all stake- holders—from brand owners to consumer—about virgin fibers. They should work together, actively participating in conversations with one another, to better inform consum- ers and other members of the industry about the sustain- ability-related benefits of different types of fibers, keeping fit-for-purpose in mind. This will create a more sustainable, total package that contributes to the circular economy and reduces emissions.
