Barbecues, Long Evenings, and the Longest Day
Who doesn’t love barbecues, long evenings, and tons of sunshine — summer has arrived! Right now is the perfect time of year because the weather is warm but not too hot yet. Everyone should enjoy these gorgeous days now because the temperatures are rising. This year, the first official day of summer falls on June 20, coinciding with the summer solstice. The summer solstice is also the longest day of the year, with the most daylight hours. To me, the extra sunlight means extra time for tending to the farm, outdoor activities, gardening, or just soaking up the sun’s rays. Speaking of the longest day of the year, have you heard of the fundraiser initiative, The Longest Day, hosted by the Alzheimer’s Association? This incredible step forward encourages participants to engage in activities they love while raising awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Association. Whether it’s running, cooking, gardening, or playing games, individuals and teams can choose any activity that brings them joy and meaning. By participating, they honor those affected by Alzheimer’s and help outshine the darkness of this devastating disease.

I love heading out every morning, no matter the season, at the crack of dawn before the sun even rises. I enjoy walking the dog just as the sun’s rays peek over the horizon and illuminate the world — it’s my quiet time. I know my phone won’t ring, emails shouldn’t be rolling in yet, and I can breathe and start my day peacefully. My summer sunrise walks always
hit a little differently — they’re much warmer than the winter months, and the air is filled with a fresh scent of promise and life! I love summer. What are your favorite aspects of the season? Vegetables are an essential part of a healthy diet, and while baked or stir-fried dishes are delicious, you could be cooking out beneficial vitamins and nutrients. Smart Home Devices Devices like Amazon Echo or Google Home can be programmed to remind patients about their daily routines, such as taking medication, eating meals, or attending appointments. These voice- activated assistants can also provide companionship and cognitive stimulation through conversation and interactive games. Automated Pill Dispensers Devices like MedaCube or Hero dispense the correct dosage of medication at the scheduled times, reducing the risk of missed or incorrect doses. They can also alert caregivers if a dose is missed. These apps and devices can be tailored to the needs of Alzheimer’s patients and offer practical solutions for managing daily routines, ensuring medication adherence, and

While I own a decent camera, 99.9% of my
photos are taken on my iPhone. I invested in a fancier model specifically for its camera capabilities. With 53,000 photos stored
on my phone, I have no shame in admitting that I sometimes take numerous shots of the same scene just to get that one perfect picture. There’s something magical about capturing the exact moment when everything perfectly aligns. The photos we capture allow us to freeze time and create memories that last a lifetime. Each photo is a window into a moment that would otherwise be lost to time — it’s like holding a piece of the past in your hands! However, I think there’s a fine line between capturing memories and being so absorbed in taking photos that we forget actually to experience the moment. After all, it’s easy to get caught up in capturing the perfect shot, but finding a balance between documenting life and living it is key. To help maintain that balance, I think it’s important to set boundaries and decide when to take photos and when to sit back and enjoy the moment. Being mindful of the photos you take is another way to capture life’s beautiful moments without going over the top. Take a moment to appreciate the scene with your own eyes before snapping a picture. This way, you’ll have the memory in your mind and your camera. Lastly, don’t forget to revisit your photos often! Reflecting on past moments can be a fun experience and remind you why you took those photos in the first place. So, grab your camera and take those beautiful shots, but don’t forget to put it down and live in the moment, too. Happy Camera Day!

Summer Chicken Salad

Ingredients
• 3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts • Salt and pepper • 4 ears of corn, shucked • 3 tbsp minced dill •
Dressing • 3/4 cup
crumbled feta cheese
• 1/2 cup half and half • 1/4 cup mayonnaise • 1/4 cup sour cream • 1 tsp sugar • Juice of 1 lemon
3 stalks celery, finely diced 1 red onion, finely diced

1 1/2 cups blueberries • 1 head of butter lettuce
Directions
1. Place chicken in a large plastic bag and pound with a mallet to flatten to 1/4-inch thickness. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. 2. Heat grill, then grill chicken on both sides for about 4 minutes per side; set aside to cool before slicing. 3. Grill corn until the kernels begin browning, turning regularly for even cooking. Use a knife to shave the kernels off. 4. In a bowl, mix all dressing ingredients until combined. 5. In a large bowl, combine corn, dill, celery, and onions, then stir in chicken and top with dressing and blueberries as desired. 6. Separate the head of butter lettuce into “cups” to fill with salad and enjoy!

How a Pet Husky Prevented Disaster
Hero Husky Saves the Neighborhood
On Dec. 15, 2023, pet owner Chanell Bell of Philadelphia was taken aback when she noticed that Kobe, her 4-year-old miniature Alaskan husky, had dug a hole in her home’s front yard. This was a stark departure from Kobe’s usual behavior, which Bell initially dismissed as boredom and promptly refilled the hole. However, when Kobe began to dig again in the same spot, Chanell realized something was amiss. “We’ve been here at our home for a while now, and he never digs holes,” Bell told USA Today. “So, I knew something was up.” She investigated further, reviewing footage from the family home’s security camera overlooking Kobe’s newfound digspot. Then, she witnessed Kobe sniff the air around the area before digging the hole in the same spot again. Thinking something Kobe smelled must have alarmed him, Bell phoned Philadelphia Gas Works, which sent a crew out to investigate. The engineers discovered that the gas lines beneath the Bell household were
old, dilapidated, and beginning to leak. After fixing the issue, the company told Bell that if Kobe had not discovered the leak, the line would have posed significant health and safety concerns for the whole neighborhood. “They told me something as simple as a light switch turning on could’ve caused an explosion,” Bell told USA Today. After Bell shared Kobe’s story on social media, it caught the attention of PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, who awarded the young husky the Heroic Dog Award. Inspired by Kobe’s efforts, Bell wrote a children’s book dedicated to him called “The Dog That Saved the Block Before Christmas.”
