HEAT PUMPS
OPERATING AT HIGHER TEMPERATURES THAN OLDER MODELS, SAMSUNG’S LATEST- GENERATION EHS MONO R290 HEAT PUMP RANGE SUPPLIED BY MIDSUMMER RENEWABLES CAN BE RETROFITTED ALONGSIDE EXISTING HEATING LAYOUTS… A new era of home heating
Ireland is warming up to renewable heat solutions. With rising fossil fuel costs, climate targets and stronger retrofit incentives, heat pumps are becoming a
central part of the conversation. Among the newer technologies attracting attention is the latest
generation of air-to-water heat pumps using R290 refrigerant, including systems such as Samsung’s EHS Mono R290 heat pump range. R290, or propane refrigerant, represents a shift in heat pump design with a much lower environmental impact while being capable of delivering higher flow temperatures. The Samsung Mono R290 range is able to consistently provide hot water of up to 75°C, even when the outdoor temp is down to -10°C. That matters in Ireland, where many homes still have traditional radiators rather than purpose-designed low-temperature heating systems. While older heat pumps typically performed best with larger radiators, underfloor heating and highly-insulated buildings, newer R290 systems operate at higher temperatures, making them more suitable for retrofit projects.
A home with higher heat loss will require more energy to maintain a comfortable temperature. Improving insulation and air tightness can significantly reduce a home’s overall heat demand. However, deep retrofit measures are not always possible, affordable or practical for every homeowner. This is where modern high-temperature heat pumps can play an important role. Designed to deliver higher flow temperatures, these systems can work effectively with existing heating layouts, including traditional radiator systems, when correctly sized and properly designed. Samsung’s R290 heat pump technology reflects a wider industry trend: heat pumps are evolving from niche low-energy solutions into mainstream home heating options. With better technology and stronger grant support, R290 heat pumps could become one of the most important pieces of Ireland’s residential energy transition.
“Heat pumps are evolving from niche low-energy solutions into mainstream home heating options.”
Irish heat pump grants Financial support has become a
major factor in accelerating adoption. Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) heat pump supports have been expanded, with the maximum available support increasing to up to €12,500 from February 2026. The support package can include the heat pump system, heating distribution upgrades and a renewable heat bonus for replacing fossil-fuel heating systems, making the upfront investment significantly more accessible. A heat pump can heat almost any home when it is properly designed and correctly sized. Important factors include accurate heat loss calculations, selecting the correct heat pump (or pumps), ensuring radiators or other heat emitters can deliver the required output and designing the system to operate efficiently.
