Collinsville Girls Defeat Geraldine in Area Finals

The Collinsville High School varsity girls' basketball program picked up a thrilling 61-56 win over DeKalb County rival Geraldine on Thursday, February 10, 2022 to win the Class 3AArea 12 Championship. The visiting Lady Bulldogs kept the game close throughout thanks to the hot-handed shooting by Gracey Johnson, who finished the night with 34 points. Johnson ignited the crowd with three first quarter 3-pointers and kept Geraldine in the game in the fourth quarter with three additional three-point baskets. With 1:25 left to play, the Lady Bulldogs trailed by only two points, 55-53. However, Collinsville held on in the final minute to secure the championship victory. Only three other Geraldine players scored in the game. JJ Dismuke scored nine points, Alexis Powell had eight points and Shelby Trester chipped in five points. Tyla Tatum paced Collinsville with 23 points and she was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player. Teammates Sophia Willis and Gracie Griggs both reached double digits with 11 points each. Collinsville's Kayla Beene added eight points, Rylee Tillery had six points and Destiny Cothran chipped in two points. To reach the Area Championship game, Collinsville picked up a 49-18 victory over Glencoe, while Geraldine defeated Hokes Bluff 48-40. With the championship win, the Lady Panthers earned the right to host Plainview in the Sub-Regional round. Geraldine will travel to Sylvania to face theArea 14 champs. Sylvania defeated Plainview40-37 in the Class 3A Area 14 Title Game. The Lady Rams reached the Championship game with a 54-45 victory over Fyffe. Plainview opened the tournament with 67-23 win over Asbury. The winners from the Sub-Regional round, which is being played after The Sports Ledger's press deadline, will move to the Northeast Regional Tournament at JSU. JSU Beach Volleyball Head Coach Todd Garvey has announced the 2022 schedule as the Gamecocks return to the ASUN for the first time since 2019. The 2022 JSU beach volleyball season is slated to start on March 11 at the Austin Peay Tournament in Clarksville, TN. Over the two-day event the Gamecocks will face ASUN foe Central Arkansas, former OVC rivals Austin Peay and UT Martin, along with NCAA Division II member Carson-Newman. In beach volleyball, the ASUN is comprised of 12 schools. JSU will face only three ASUN opponents this season which includes Central Arkansas, two matches against EKU and two matches against UNA. Following the season- opener at Austin Peay, JSU travels to Chattanooga on March 17 for a dual meet starting at 2 p.m. The third road trip of the season will see the Gamecocks travel to Conway, SC for the Coastal Carolina tournament. The two-day event will include matches with Erskine and Tusculum along with a pair of matches against the host Chanticleers March 19-20. A tri-match hosted by North Alabama on March 23, will feature the second
see North Alabama for the second time at the Eastern Kentucky Tournament in Richmond on April 1. JSU will also take on Austin Peay on the first day of the event before taking on Eastern Illinois and the host Colonels on April 2. JSU will host a dual meet against Chattanooga on April 5, at McCellean's South Beach Volleyball facility at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Seniors Lena Kindermann, Peyton Pauze, Bailey Nelsoj and Bethnay Randall will be recognized at the dual meet. The Gamecocks will close out the regular season where it began at Clarksville, TN. In the second Austin Peay Tournament JSU will face UT Martin and EKU on April 15, before facing Oklahoma Wesleyan and Austin Peay on April 16. The ASUN Beach Tournament will take place April 22-25 in Huntsville. Per the ASUN, teams will be assigned to one of two pools based on seeding for the conference tournament. All teams will play a full round robin against the five other teams in their pool.
The Geraldine varsity boys' basketball team finished in second place in the 2022 DeKalb County Basketball Tournament, falling to Plainview 96-49. The Bulldogs also fell just short of winning the Class 3A Area 12 Championship. Geraldine fell to Hokes Bluff 50-45. Geraldine advanced to the Northeast Sub-Regionals and the Bulldogs are set for a rematch against Plainview on Feb. 15, which is after The Sports Ledger's press deadline for this issue. To reach the Area finals, the Bulldogs picked up a 74-46 victory over Collinsville, while Hokes Bluff reached the title game with a 53-40 win over Glencoe.
