Spring and Autumn , 2025 Acrylic on wood panel 96.8 × 290 × 3.3 cm

Malcolm Tait is a Lincolnshire-based artist who graduated with a Fine Art degree from the University of Lincoln in 2006 at the age of fifty-six. Tait’s practice spans painting, installation and assemblage, shaped by earlier life experiences in diverse occupations including publican, lobster fisherman, factory worker and chef. Colour informs emotional responses drawn from life experience, and how it evokes emotion is a central concern of his painting practice. In his assemblage and making processes, he explores the meanings embedded in objects, with these meanings derived from narrative, history and lived experience. He examines how combining various objects can lead to expressions that convey entirely unrelated ideas.

Artwork Introduction

Spring and Autumn reflects the colours of the two seasons, spring and autumn. The work was inspired by discovering a cluster of six ladybirds among the leaves and stems of an early daffodil. Malcolm Tait used irregular canvas shapes derived from a drawing of an upright daffodil, laid on its side to produce a linear timeline effect. The daffodil has six petals, which inspired the circular form. Circles have long symbolised oneness and mystery. While the daffodil and ladybirds provided the initial inspiration, the work alludes to both seasons. The circular form conveys a sense of motion, reflecting the transitory nature of spring and autumn, as spring heralds summer and autumn heralds winter. The symmetrical appearance of the daffodil leaves within the circles is transformed into flowing shapes, emphasising the passage and rhythm of seasonal change.
