Women Would Do It Differently , 2025 Wood, metal, cotton 29 × 90 × 5 cm

Marion Mandeng holds a Master’s degree in Contemporary Photography, Practice and Philosophy from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. Mandeng’s work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, Saatchi Gallery, London, Tate Modern Exchange and Art Karlsruhe. The practice centres on transformation, working primarily with object art and assemblage that use fabrics and found objects, often tools or materials linked to masculine domains, as the basis for a sculptural language that questions social roles, perception and identity. Crocheting, historically tied to women’s domestic labour, is central to the process. Through wrapping objects in cotton thread, form is altered and function obscured, stripping utilitarian identity to allow new meaning. This labour-intensive act becomes symbolic, pointing to shifts in gendered roles and the time required for genuine societal change. The works call for a re-evaluation of power structures, and their transformation invites the viewer to confront deeply embedded narratives of gender, labour, and visibility.

Artwork Introduction Women Would Do It Differently presents a non-functional AK-47 air gun encased in a hand-crocheted cotton covering. By wrapping an object synonymous with violence in a soft domestic material, Marion Mandeng disarms its menace and reconfigures its presence.
