Observe (V) , 2025 Bobbin thread, bottle caps, plywood, magnets 54 × 78 × 23 cm

Matilda Aylward is an artist currently studying for a BA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins. Aylward’s practice bridges abstraction, minimalism and kinetic art through printmaking, installation and weaving. Semi-sculptural forms emerge as direct workings of space, often using materials such as electrical tape or woven structures. Mathematical processes and data are employed to reimagine the commonplace and to encourage closer observation. By abstracting surroundings, Aylward identifies patterns of number and repetition within the mundane, curating data into undecipherable visuals that highlight information while withholding access. This tension plays with what is revealed to the viewer. Planning becomes algorithmic to visualise balance, while the act of making echoes the plotting of a graph.

Artwork Introduction

Observe (V) comprises 109 individual weavings on bottle caps, encompassing patterns encountered between July 2024 and September 2025. These include tube seats, architecture, paving stones, clothes, bags, signs and more, reduced to single weavings. The work serves as an abstract journal of 421 days, drawn from everyday encounters of a London resident and commuter. The caps echo the overlooked nature of patterns, as design features on bottles are quickly discarded.

The title Observe (V) reflects the act of looking and invites the viewer to do the same. The piece is periodically updated with newly discovered patterns.
