My Beautiful Coffin , 2025 Oil on canvas 122 × 152 cm
Michael Slusakowicz is a Polish-born painter based in the United Kingdom. Since graduating from Camberwell College of Arts in 2011, Slusakowicz has worked primarily in painting, video and drawing, often combining media to articulate subject matter. Slusakowicz’s paintings show a sustained interest in oil as a medium, exploring colour and texture while focusing on the narratives behind the works. Subjects aim to capture moments in time akin to film stills, positioning viewers as witnesses confronted with fear and dark fantasy, with paintings acting as triggers for imagination. Recent solo and group exhibitions include the Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award 2024 at the National Portrait Gallery, London, Everyday Mooonday in Seoul 2023, and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition 2021 and 2022.
Artwork Introduction My Beautiful Coffin was inspired by the idea of an imaginary death. Michael Slusakowicz symbolically portrays the act of carrying a coffin and the interaction between attendees at the scene. The empty coffin suggests an act of artistic transformation.
Originally titled Pallbearers , the painting reflects a fascination with eccentric characters and marks a shift towards more elaborate and enigmatic imagery.
