Ming Gao was born in Guizhou, China, and currently lives and works in Hangzhou. Ming Gao graduated from the China Academy of Art in 2004 with a degree in oil painting. Ming Gao’s practice gives form to emotions that arise from realms and dimensions beyond everyday life and thought. The imagery is rooted in an inquiry into the essence of real things, exploring the relationship between the material world, ideas and memory. The work reflects on the meaning of reality itself and how each individual defines what is real—whether it is what we see, what we feel or what we remember. These deeply personal visions are realised through layers of vivid colour and textures that differ from the qualities of real objects. Refined, almost planar patterns emerge through expressive brushwork and the shifting interplay between virtual and real spaces.
