ArtEvol 2025 / Richard P Jones

District Line #2, London , 2024 Reconstructed high-speed video on brushed aluminium 100 × 100 × 3 cm

Richard P. Jones is a British audio-visual journalist whose artistic practice focuses on contemporary life and the revelation of the unseen. Recent work investigates the liminal zone where the physical and digital worlds intersect, using images, video, soundscape, voice, 3D models and data clouds. Until 2012, Jones was based in Hong Kong and Tokyo, producing photojournalistic research recognised with multiple awards including the Human Rights Press Awards and a UK Press Award. Since returning to the United Kingdom, Jones has developed hybrid media projects for the visual arts, including the ongoing series City Scans . This project captures the real-time movement of commuters and transport systems in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Istanbul and London through high- speed video, reconstructing footage into layered temporal structures. The result is imagery that exposes extended time frames and unseen visual possibilities, part documentary and part experiment, mapping the rhythm and pulse of cities at the intersection of technology and human presence.

Artwork Introduction District Line #2, London presents real-time movement on the London Underground. Data was collected using a high-speed video camera and reconstructed into layered time structures, creating imagery that reveals extended periods and unseen visual possibilities at the intersection of the digital and real worlds. Part documentary and part visual experiment, the work depicts the daily rhythm and pulse of the city, showing how time, technology and human presence interlace within the contemporary metropolis.

The image is from the ongoing series City Scans , captured in some of the world’s largest cities, including Tokyo, London, Hong Kong and Istanbul.
