ArtEvol 2025 / Wonyoung Shim

Gate 27.39 , 2025 Aluminium, acrylic, bolt, PLA 90 × 35 × 25 cm

Wonyoung Shim is an artist based between London and Seoul whose practice spans installation, sculpture and sound. Shim explores subtle disruptions in everyday perception, creating immersive environments through spatial tension and non-linear composition that expose the fragile threshold between clarity and ambiguity. The work often engages with invisible or inaudible layers of experience, cultivating a slowed and attentive state at the edge of perception. In 2021, Shim was commissioned for the Amsa-Dong Local Revitalisation Project in Seoul, designing and fabricating a permanent public sculpture. Exhibitions include Fables at Mall Galleries London 2025, Echoes of Stillness and Provisional We at The Handbag Factory London 2025, SOFT DATA at The Fitzrovia Gallery London 2025 and Seoul Ghost at Upper Gulbenkian Gallery London 2024.

Artwork Introduction Gate 27.39 explores cymatics, the phenomenon in which sound frequencies generate visible forms. Cymatics refers to the geometric patterns emerging when specific frequencies interact with matter, capturing the moment when invisible vibrations become visible. These frequencies carry a dual nature: they can temporarily disrupt perception while also enabling physical restoration. This paradox, marked by dissonance and resolution, chaos and order, forms the core subject of the work. Within this hybridity, the piece searches for a new form of sensory thought. Frequencies, though immaterial, reveal hidden structures and systems of order that would otherwise remain unseen. The work moves beyond visualising a scientific phenomenon to evoke worlds that extend beyond the limits of ordinary perception.
