Zhijie Zhang’s work consistently explores power dynamics, using highly intuitive visuals to create a sacred and solemn atmosphere. In a sense, the experience of the sacred is rooted in its binary opposition to the mundane; it is a social construct, defined by people and shaped by society. At its core, it is the sensory expression of power’s oppressive nature. He seeks to use elements such as symmetry, circles, and fabric, along with compositions imbued with mysticism, to examine how the visual representation of power evokes a sense of the sacred, while also carrying political undertones.
Artwork Introduction Applause explores the dynamics of power. The white fabric carries a sacred quality, and the objects it conceals create a sense of mystery. This secrecy functions as a classic form of power. Two large golden hands appear to be applauding, while a black sphere emerges on a plane resembling a theatrical stage, signifying a moment of genesis. Circular forms and symmetry, imbued with mysticism, form the conceptual foundation of the work.
