Joy Bath , 2022 Mixed media on canvas 220 × 200 cm

Ndidi Emefiele lives and works in Northampton, UK. Inspired by both Nigerian traditions and cultural references linked to gender and identity, Emefiele creates multidisciplinary works that incorporate CDs, textiles, painting, paper, and found objects. Her layered figurative compositions blend traditional media with contemporary subjects, forming a compelling narrative characterised by dynamic brushwork and bold colour juxtapositions. Deeply influenced by contemporary Nigerian culture and its evolving attitudes toward women, Emefiele’s work challenges conventional gender roles. Her canvases depict women as dominant, self-assured figures who exist in solidarity, free from the male gaze. The large glasses they often wear act as ideological shields, symbolising protection from societal pressures and expectations. Through her use of unconventional materials, Emefiele reflects both the vibrancy and complexity of modern African identity, addressing themes of autonomy, visibility, and resilience.
