Kirsten Bassett is a self-taught emerging artist and hairstylist based in London. Working intuitively with recycled human hair, Bassett transforms a material often tied to beauty into figurative sculptures that evoke unease and reflection. Her work challenges conventional associations, exploring intense emotional states and reimagining how familiar materials can convey meaning in contemporary art. embodies frustration, despondency and the suffocating grasp of dark thoughts. Central to the work is human hair, a material often associated with beauty and vitality yet rendered unsettling once detached from the body and commonly dismissed as waste. Its capacity to bind, tangle and embed beneath the skin exposes a contradictory nature within something traditionally seen as virtuous. VESTIGES #1 is a sculptural exploration of mental entrapment. Life Is for Living If You Let It is a short film set against the surreal backdrop of a travelling funfair on the cliffs of Margate. Drawing on the thrill-seeking energy of childhood and adolescence, the film reflects on how relationships with excitement and chaos shift with age. The work unfolds as a romantic letter to the self, an exploration of solitude, memory and the need to embrace fleeting joy within the turbulence of adult life.
