King's Business - 1920-06

590 the lowing of the oxen, which King Saul had taken from the wicked people, and then Samuel asked King Saul what this all meant? King Saul began to make excuse and say that the people had saved them alive to offer them as sacri fices to the Lord. Samuel told King Saul that it was better to obey the Lord than to offer up sacrifices, for when we do not do as God asks us to do, we cannot please Him. You see King Saul started out well, but he failed when he did not do exactly as God had asked him to do. I wonder if children ever try to do things just a little differently from what they are told? You see King Saul did his way instead of God’s way and he got into trouble. Then Samuel told King Saul that because he had dis obeyed the Lord, the Lord would not let him be king any longer over his people. This was a sad day for King

THE K I N G ’ S BUS I NE S S Saul, and all because he had his own way and did not obey God. Our mem ory verse is one that we should learn so well that we will remember it al ways. “We must obey God rather than men.” If we do .as our memory verse tells us we will never make the sad mis take that King Saul made. God never asks us to do only what is best for us, so let us always obey Him, and then we will be a joy to the Lord, to our par ents and. to everybody that knows us. (This is a very practical lesson for chil dren, as they are tempted to disobey and make excuses, as Saul did. Empha size obedience.) Closing Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, we thank Thee for this story that tells us we must obey God rather than men, and help us to live this story every day in our lives.

(4) And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peace ably? (5) And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the Lord: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons^ and called them to the sacrifice. (6) And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD’S anointed is before him. (7) But the LORD said unto Sam uel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the out ward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. (8) Then Jesse called Abini- dab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he^ said, neither hath the LORD chos en this. (9) Then Jesse made Shammah Introduction. Saul’s disobedience concerning Ama- lek resulted in his being rebuked by Samuel and rejected by God, though he had grown in power and popularity with

to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. (10) Again Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these. (11) And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remain- eth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse,_Send and fetch him: for. we will not sit down till he come hither. (12) And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. (13) Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the. Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. the people.
