The rod chastens me when I go astray and the -Staff stays me when I should fall. The one calls me from my fault .and error and the other helps me in His truth and verity.—Hooper. v. 5. Table in presence of enemies. When the soldier is in the presence of his enemies he snatches a hasty meal and hastens away to the fight, but noth­ ing is hurried here. The enemy is at the door and yet God prepares a table and the Christian sits down and eats as if everything were in perfect peace. Peace for His people in the midst of most trying circumstances.— Spurgeon. God does not depend upon wicked men in the benediction of His servants. He without them can bless His all. Their attempt against the blessing of His peo­ ple is too impotent to frustrate God’s intention and pleasure. ~ér Sedgwick. Anointest head with oil. There are three Qualities of oil— smoothness to touch, brightness to sight, fragrance to smell. How fully does this represent the Spirit’s unction which alone re­ joices and exhilarates the soul. It is called the oil of gladness and the joy of the Holy Ghost.—Hardy. It was an act of great respect to pour perfumed oil on the head of a distinguished guest. —Roberts. Thou hast not confined thy bounty merely to the necessities of life but thou hast poured out upon me also Thy luxuries.—Barth. My cup runneth over. Those who have this happiness must see that their cup overflow into their poor breth­ ren’s emptier vessels.— Trapp. Where­ fore does the Lord make your cup to run over but that other men’s lips may taste the liquor?— Seeker. v. 6. Goodness and mercy shall fol­ low me. I wish no better rear guards than those. God’s goodness and loving kindness follow our every step.—Torrey. These two angels of God shall follow and encamp around the pilgrim. The enemies whom God held back while he feasted may pursue but will not over- tak¿ him. The white wings of these two messengers of the covenant will never be far away from the journeying child.—Maclaren. The house of the Lord. A wicked man, it may be, will turn into God’s house and say a prayer

but the godly man must dwell there forever. His soul lies always at the throne of grace asking for grace.—- Fenner. In this psalm we have the Lord with us, the green pastures be­ neath us, the still waters beside us, the enemies around us, goodness and mercy after us, and beyond us, the house of the Lord forever.— Inglis. How God Takes Care of Us. Psalm 23:1-6. Memory Verse: “ He careth for you.” 1 Peter 5:7. Approach: Some of you have little baby brothers and sisters at home, and can these little babies take care of themselves? No, they cannot help themselves, and who BEGINNERS takes care of them AND PRIMARY a n d c a r ef ully Mabel L. Merrill watches over them day and night? Mother. Yes, she is very faithful in her care of baby brother or sister, keep­ ing him away from the fire, seeing that he does not fall or put something harm­ ful into his mouth, and O so many other things that we could not mention them all if we tried. Just think how good we ought to be to mother who took such good care of us. Prayer.
