chapter of John, praying all the while that the Holy Spirit Himself might take the truth home. At last the decision point was reached. We breathed a prayer, “Lord, may Satan not win,” and pleading the promise, “before they call I will answer,” rejoiced when we heard the man say, “Yes, X will accept God’s gift. I recognize I am a sinner, and that Christ died for me. I accept Him now.” Oh, dear reader, this is only one sailor, on one vessel. At this Christmas time, while you are enjoying the fellow ship of loved ones around your Christ mas tree, or open fire, will you think of the thousands of sailors in dingy, dirty, poorly ventilated rooms, far from home, with few friends to offer a word of cheer or a bright, happy “Merry Christmas!” Yes, and fewer than friends or loved ones, is the “mission ary,” “sky pilot,” or “Psalm singer,” as he is often called, who will tactfully, lovingly, yet firmly tell him that he is a lost sinner, and that without a per sonal acceptance of Jesus Christ (Im manuel), there is no hope; but by an acceptance of Him, he may have assur ance of sins forgiven, and a home in God’s harbor of Eternal Happiness. SPANISH WORK R obert H . Bender, Supt.— Gospel M eetings and House to House W^ork am ong 50,000 M exicans in L os A ngeles and V icinity. “Come ye yourselves ap art and rest aw hile.” H FTER spending the summer months in strenuous service, holding nightly meetings in Mexican camps,, we thought it well to rest a bit from our labor, though had it not been that we must consider these mortal bodies to-a certain extent, we would far rather have continued giving out the Word of

life to these needy ones. Having no particular items of interest to report, because of the vacation, we thought it might be of interest to our readers to know just what the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church are. The fol lowing is an “Abridgment of Christian Doctrine” as arranged by a Catholic writer. The “Six Precepts of the Church” are as follows: 1. To hear Mass and rest from servile work on Sundays and Holy days. 2. To fast and abstain on the days ap pointed. 3. To confess our sins to an approved priest at least once a year. 4. To receive worthily the Holy Euch arist during Easter time. 5. To contribute to the support of the Church and Pastor. 6. Not to marry persons who are not Catholics, or who are related to us within the fourth degree pf kin dred, nor privately without wit nesses. The Seven Sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist, Pen ance, Extreme Unction, Holy Orders, Matrimony. The Theological Virtues: Faith, Hope, Charity. The Cardinal Virtues: Prudence, Justice, Fortitude, Temperance. The Seven Gifts of the Holy Ghost: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, For titude, Knowledge, Piety, Fear of the Lord. The Spiritual Works of Mercy: To admonish the sinners; to instruct the ignorant; to counsel the doubtful; to comfort the sorrowful; to bear wrongs patiently; to forgive all injuries; to pray for the living and the dead. The Corporal Works of Mercy: To feed the hungry; to give drink to the thirsty; to clothe the naked; to ran

som the captive; to harbor the harbor less; to visit the sick; to bury the dead. Three Eminent Virtues: Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving. Evangelical Counsels: Voluntary Poverty, Chastity, Obedience. The Four Last Things: Death, Judgment, Heaven, Hell. What every Christian must know under pain of mortal sin: It is ab solutely necessary for all those who have come to the use of reason, that is, those who are about seven years of age, to know that there is one God in three Divine Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost; that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, became man and died on the cross for our salvation; and that in the next world God forever rewards the good and punishes the wicked. Those who are ignorant of these truths are unfit for the sacra ments. Every Christian is bound also to know (1st), the Lord’s Prayer, the Hail Mary and the Apostle’s Creed. (2nd), at least in substance the com mandments of God, the precepts of the Church, and the Sacraments, particular ly these three: Baptism, Penance, and the Holy Eucharist; It is a mortal sin for a Christian to be wilfully ignorant of these things. After this follow many prayers, which they are to learn by heart. We will only give the “Prayer before Confes sion” : “I confess to Almighty God, to bles sed Mary ever Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the holy Apostles Peter .and Paul, to all the Saints, and to your Father, that i have sinned exceedingly in thought and in word and in deed, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault (here (Continued on page 570)
