other; and, as night draws on, the . story that never grows old is repeated, and some glad day the Master of the house will rise up and shut to the door as He whispers, “It is enough.” “So I am watching quietly every day: Whenever the sun shines brightly, I rise to say ‘Surely it is the shining of His face!’ And look into the gates of His high place, Beyond the sea. For I know He is coming shortly to summon me, And when the shadow falls across the window of the room Where I am working my appointed ■ task, I lift my head to watch the door, And ask if He is come. And the Spirit answers softly in my room ‘Only a few more shadows and He will come.’ ” a t , WORK AMONG THE JEWS Bible C lasses and Person al W ork, S treet M eetings and Sem i-M onthly M ass M eetings for Jew s of- L os Angeles. H HOSE who have the welfare of Israel at heart will be inter ested in the following ex tracts from a letter to one of the Jewish workers at the Biola Institute from one who some years ago, during a very great illness, was taught by the Holy Spirit, through the Word of God, the truths concerning the place and plan of God in regard to the Jewish race. The church of which she was a member at this time, thought her views very extreme and refused to accept them, as they themselves claim ed they were the "true Israelites.” For nine years she has devoted much of her prayer-life to intercession for Israel. Recently when she learned there was a prayer meeting for Jews at the Biola Institute she came a long distance to attend it. Here she heard Dr. Howard Kellogg speak on “Zionism and the Future of Israel.” At the close of the message Hebrew Christians were asked to give their testimony as to what the Lord Jesus Christ had done for them. As she listened for the first time to Hebrew Christian men acknowl edge the Deity of the Lord Jesus and express their conviction that He is no other than their long-hoped-for-Messiah —her deep joy could not find expression except in tears, and in the letter already referred to, she said: “I was so rejoiced for the favor of being at the last Sunday meeting for God’s specially beloved people, the Jews. The little sister, Mrs. Blank, and I are both poor as to this world’s goods and cannot come often, but our hearts are full and running over with love for Israel. I was so thankful for the words and prayer (so beautiful) of Br. Black- stone, so long a laborer in the vineyard of the Lord. And the speaker—I enjoy ed all of his message. “So few seem to see a difference be tween a call to work in ‘the field’ as witnesses to all nations, and a call to

work in ‘the vineyard of the Lord’—i.e. The house of Israel (Isa. 5:7). They are even fighting the truth that ‘there is a remnant according to the election of Grace’ now to be added to the Body. hove alone opens our eyes to these promises concerning ‘the remnant.’ Who am I that the God of Israel (‘and of the Gentiles also’—we are the ‘also’ are we not?) should give me this love, this longing to hear the word ‘Jesus’ spoken with love and deep reverence from Jew ish lips? That was why I was so over come I could hardly speak. God is so good and kind to me, hearing and an swering my prayer of years with regard to Israel. “I’ve found my little place to work and pray. Names of dear ones longed for (the recipient of the letter had sent her a list of Jews to pray for) gives one faith for definite answers. So long I prayed and loved almost alone, ‘yet not alone,’ and when the speaker read over the long familiar Deuteronomy 30 and others which I’ve read again and again to deaf ears and blind eyes—my heart rejoiced in the Lord. If it is His will, my heart’s desire is not only to see my own loved ones in the Kingdom, but that I might be used of the Lord in Palestine as an obstetric nurse to Jew ish mothers, to His glory. They will need such work done, and the very na ture of that kind of work would give an opportunity to ‘preach the Word’ in loving deed, and seasonable use of His Word.” We are sure there are many of God’s dear children who, like the friends of the writer of this letter, have not yet had a vision of God’s 1plan and purpose for His own people, Israel, not remem bering that the Gospel is “to the Jew first.” It. was with this in mind, that the first Evangelistic worker employed by the Institute was one for work among the Jews, and this department of the Institute activities has been greatly blessed and owned of God. We wish that every one of our readers might have the privilege of attending one of the Sunday afternoon meetings which are held semi-monthly for He- brew-Christians. We are sure their hearts would be warmed and blessed as was the heart of this good woman. That, was the strange and shallow remark made a few years ago by' a preacher in the city of my residence. Such a jumbling of ideas is foolish, to say the least. Should he not be held somewhat responsible for the vague and confusing conceptions some persons entertain of the distinct and Scriptural doctrine of the second com ing of Christ? And does it not seem like an insult to the Holy Spirit who caused the Lord’s sure return to be mentioned so very often, perhaps more frequently than any other doctrine in the New Testament? And what must Jesus Himself think of one of His pro fessed ambassadors thus to distort His plain and comforting announcement, “I will come again?” On various occasions Christ spoke of His going away and of His return. And after He had ascended on high “Ohrist is Here—Why Talk About His Coming?” Rev. A. W. Orwig
